Transitions and Celebrations
Term four is a busy term for student learning and it is fabulous to see our students engaged and focussed.
This term we have also been preparing for our new 2024 Prep students and you may have noticed them attending school for their Prep Experience days. We are also in the process of supporting our current students to make the transition to their next year level and will once again provide an opportunity in week 10 for students to meet their teacher and class members for 2024. Our Year 6 students have also been preparing for their very exciting move to high school and the start of their new learning adventure.
There are many celebrations this term as well, please check the calendar for dates that you need to be aware of.
Reporting on Learning success
Our teachers will be preparing information for end of year reports over the next few weeks. Reports will be emailed to parents and carers on Wednesday 6 December. Please ensure that your email details with the school are current so that you receive a copy.
Media reporting of changes to school hours
Recently the Department of Education released a framework to guide any proposed changes to school hours. Unfortunately there has been some media reporting and commentary on this procedure including a suggestion that this procedure will lead to a 4-day school week.
I can assure our community and families that Queensland State Schools are operational five days per week and any changes to primary school arrangements would only be considered in exceptional circumstances. This new procedure has been designed to provide consistency of approach, especially in high school settings where senior students often participate in approved off campus activities, for example attending TAFE. I hope this provides some further clarity and understanding.
Mobile phones ‘Away for the Day’
From the beginning of 2024, all Queensland state school students will have their mobile phones switched off and ‘away for the day’.
'Away for the day' will support our school to maintain a strong focus on educational achievement, and student wellbeing and engagement by:
- providing optimal learning and teaching environments
- encouraging increased face-to-face social interactions between students
- promoting the health and wellbeing of students through increased physical activity at break times
- reducing the potential for students to be exposed to the negative impacts of the digital world, resulting from unsafe or inappropriate technology use.
For more information and frequently asked questions, visit the department’s website https://tinyurl.com/329kup6u
Have a safe week!

PBL & Social-Emotional Learning
The focus for the fortnight is:
Be a Friend – We encourage and support others.
This fortnight’s focus supports the expectation of Be a Friend by encouraging and supporting each other to be the best version of themselves. Teachers and students have been thinking of ways that they can show encouragement and support each other especially at this busy time of the year with assessments starting. It has been wonderful to see how students have engaged with the concept and hearing their random acts of kindness and encouragement.

At Craigslea SS this looks and sounds like:
- We support each other and work as a team
- We share and contribute
- We build trust through positive actions and words
- We encourage and inspire others
- We listen to understand
- We are happy when others succeed
- We keep our body calm and our hands and feet to ourself
- We allow others to participate in activities and share resources
- We respect others space.
Social Emotional Learning
Many times, throughout our day we have the opportunity to support a student’s social and emotional learning needs.
When we teach coping skills and strategies to our students, it's important to fill their toolboxes with a variety of different skills. What works in one situation might not be helpful in another.
Here are 5 types of coping skills to teach your student:
- Deep Breathing - Examples: 4-7-8 breathing, belly breathing, pretending to smell a candle and then blow it out.
- Expressive Strategies - Examples: Talking to someone, writing or drawing about how you feel.
- Distraction - Examples: Walking away, finding something else to do, saying the alphabet backwards.
- Positive Self-Talk - Examples: Reminding yourself that you can make good choices, telling yourself to focus on what you can control.
- Physical Movement - Examples: Walking, stretching, yoga, pushing on something.
These are just a few examples of each type. What different strategies do you have in your toolbox?
Step Up Day
At Craigslea we act to support all children with the transition to their new year level in 2024. As part of this support, we will have Step Up Day on Monday 4 December 2023 for our current Prep-Year 5 students.
Step Up Day provides children the opportunity to be acquainted with their new class members and meet their new teacher (where possible). During Step Up Day children will spend approximately one hour in their 2024 classroom and experience a learning/ get to know you activity. The aim is to enable them to be more comfortable about the change to a new class. This day also provides children an opportunity to be familiar with their new classroom and to then be confident to orientate themselves on Monday 22 January 2024 when they return to school.
After their session, children will bring home a class placement note. This note will inform you of your child/ren’s class teacher and class placement for 2024. These sessions are very effective in supporting students transition to their new class.
For our 2024 Preps they are invited to their Meet the Teacher session on Thursday 23 November - 9:30-10:30am. Our 2024 Preps will come to “big” school and meet their teacher and fellow classmates and have fun engaging in some activities whilst checking out their classroom.
2024 Student Leader Selection Update
This week, our 2024 School Leader nominees delivered their speeches to the Year 4 and 5 cohorts. The quality of speeches was exceptional, and it has made it a difficult task to narrow down and elect our incoming leaders. All candidates will be notified of the outcome in week 8 with the successful candidates announced at the Year 3-6 assembly. Congratulations to all students who have been involved, your courage and bravery undertaking the leadership process in to be commended.
Year 5 Immersion Day at Craigslea State High School
On Thursday, 30 November from 9am to 12pm, all Year 5 students with their teachers have been invited to attend the Craigslea State High School Immersion Day. This day aims to familiarise students with the way high school operates as well as allow them to see the different facilities high schools have. Student consent forms to attend have been sent home with Year 5 students today. Please complete this form by Monday 27 November.
2024 NAPLAN ONLINE
In 2024, our current Year 2 and 4 students will undertake their Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN Assessments online.
In order to prepare our students, teachers will be facilitating opportunities for students to begin accessing NAPLAN Online preparation materials via their iPads in 2023, so that they may develop an increased familiarity and fluency with the online format and requisite digital skills ahead of the 2024 assessments.
The preparation that takes place at school will simply be to ensure that students become familiar with and confident in utilising the NAPLAN Online interface and that they also develop the seven key ICT skills for learning online that are listed below:
- Locate and select an answer
- Type an answer
- Read the screen and navigate web pages
- Manipulate objects on a screen
- Read and comprehend digital texts
- Plan and compose text using word processing
- Listen using headphones
The Year 3 students will be using school iPads to complete the 2024 NAPLAN online. Although, in Year 3 students will complete their writing test using pencil and paper.
The Year 5 students will either be using their BYOD iPad or a school iPad. The NAPLAN Online Writing Test for Year 5 will require students to view their screens whilst typing their written responses. Parents will also need to ensure that they have working, reliable headphones for their student to use within the classroom in Term 4 of 2023 and into 2024.
We ask that all parents check that their student has downloaded the ‘NAP Locked Down Browser’ App at their next opportunity, so that teachers and students can continue/commence using this in class and/or at home to develop their familiarity with the online testing environment ahead of 2024. It will also be important to download the 2024 version, which is accessible below:
NAPLAN LOCKED DOWN BROWSER- Install & Access
https://apps.apple.com/au/app/nap-locked-down-browser/id1086807255
When in the locked-down browser, students will have access to the online writing window that they will complete their writing assessments in.
NAPLAN PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION SITE- Access Online from any device
Teachers and parents can help expose students to the wide-range of technology-enhanced questions that they will encounter within the online assessments in 2024 in order to increase their familiarity and fluency with the testing format.
An online assessment public demonstration site can be accessed at the below link:
https://nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site
Providing your students with the aforementioned hardware and software will enable them to begin their preparation for familiarising with the online interface now. We know that the more familiar students are with the online platform, the more comfortable they will be during the assessment window.
We wish to iterate that this preparation is not "teaching to the test" regarding content for the NAPLAN online assessments. However, it is providing an opportunity for students to familiarise with the online interface and continue to develop the digital literacy and fluency that they will require when undertaking the assessments in 2024.
Active School Travel
Walking Wheeling Wednesday’s
Wednesdays at Craigslea, are Walking Wheeling Wednesdays! Our school is a part of the Brisbane City Council initiative – Active School Travel.
It was wonderful to see so many of our families and students actively travelling to school.
Why actively travelling to school is good for our kids:
- Higher academic performance in class in terms of attention and alertness
- Developing a sense of independent decision making
- Extra physical activity in the day
- Physical activity helps reduce levels of stress, depression and anxiety
- They learn essential road safety skills
- Forming active behaviours likely to continue later in life
If you live too far away to walk from home, try Park & Stride. Check out our active travel map to see where you can park away from the school and walk/ride/scooter the rest of the way. Active School Travel is one of the easiest ways to incorporate physical activity into everyday life for all children.
How will you actively travel on Wednesdays? #activeschooltravel
Have an amazing fortnight of fun and learning,
Natalie and Sarah

The preppies have been enjoying our Julia Donaldson author study. Top hits are The Ugly Five, Superworm and Monkey Puzzle! We are proud as punch to be learning to blend 4-letter words, read different sentences and learn our final digraph friends in InitiaLit. We have been comparing the duration of time for different events – does it take longer to go to the library or go to the toilet? We’ve been exploring different toys for science to see how they can move, and ask questions like, 'will it slide or roll?' We’ve been pushing toys off ramps to find out! |
Year 1 |
Word problem Wizzes and Procedure writing Professors! Superstars of Sound and Light and Champions of detecting changes over time! Year 1 have been discovering all sorts of new ways to demonstrate their learning and share their understanding. Listening to the students read makes our hearts skip a beat as we recognise how far they have all come this year. We have just a few short weeks to spend with our precious Year 1 students before they head off on holidays. There are lots of exciting events still to come this term. Lots to look forward to. |
Year 2 |
Where has this term gone? Flying by so quickly! We’ve been measuring all sorts of things and following directions on paths to all sorts of places! Maths has been fun! In English, we’ve been writing procedures, mostly on how to make Grandma some pretty disgusting medicines. Science has been about how we use and save the world’s precious resources like water. How do you save water at your house? |
Year 3 |
In Year 3 we have been finishing off our poetry portfolios with the third poem being created for any audience on any topic we choose. We have been focusing on incorporating language features to enrich our writing. In Maths, we have continued exploring fractions and finding equivalent fractions! HASS has us exploring areas in our community that we can utilise to be active and support our wellbeing. In Science we have continued to explore the effects of heat on materials and observing ice and chocolate change from a solid to a liquid! |
Year 3/4 |
We have finished most of our assessments, with just a few questions here and there in Science and Hass to go. Good copies of our persuasive texts will be our focus in English for the coming weeks. We have some drama and dance to have fun with, as well as completing our sustainability iMovie projects, Save the Earth posters, and our Mayan Temples in Minecraft Education. Grade 4 excursion – permission and payment need to be finalised. |
Year 4 |
In Year 4, we are busy bees, completing our Term 4 assessments. We are writing persuasive texts in English and investigating forces and sustainability in Science and HaSS respectively. Students are also enjoying creating an advertisement in Media to encourage communities to become more sustainable. We are very excited about our excursion next week to Ngutana-Lui! |
Year 5 |
In Year 5 we are finishing our Storm Boy comparisons with most of us enjoying the movie more than the book. We have engaged in panel discussions about Storm Boy, and it was very interesting to hear others’ opinions and questions. In Science, we are having fun creating our own experiments on viscosity of different liquids (although it can be very messy). |
Year 5/6 |
In Year 5/6, students have been finishing the design and creation of their own print advertisements. Students have described their design choices and reflected on the effectiveness of their advertisements. Students in Year 5 have been learning about the roles of customs officers, judges and police while our Year 6 students have analysed how the rights of different groups have changed over time. |
Year 6 |
In Year 6 we have been busy working on our final assessments for primary school. We have been creating print advertisements in English, investigating how changes in the environment affect the growth and survival of living things in Science and creating video health messages in Health/Media. We can’t believe that we only have a few weeks of primary school left! |

Here are just a few recaps first hand from our students.
This year we went to Camp Currimundi. It was an incredible experience that taught us many lessons and new skills such as building catapults, working in teams, being organised and creating lifelong friendships and memories. Some of the fun, thrilling activities we did include catapulting, body boarding, caving and archery which all taught us new abilities. For example, how to overcome our fears and nock an arrow. In conclusion, camp was a fun and educational experience that taught us valuable life lessons and skills. - Jasmine and Sharon.
At camp carrumundi some of the favourite activities were caving where we got to crawl through really tight spaces with no lights whatsoever with specific routes we had to take. We went boogie boarding where we got to ride massive waves which was fun but we got dumped a few times which hurt but we got back up and went again and finally archery where we got to use bows and had to aim at the targets and gain points for our team to be declared the overall winner. These are just some of the activities we got to do at the Crazy Cool Camp Carrumundi. - Jack
At camp we started off having lunch when we got there. Then we had a safety talk. After that we got to our cabins. On the first day, our group did body boarding. While we were doing that a storm came so we had to finish an hour and 15 minutes early. We then went back to our cabins and had a room inspection. If your room was clean you would get lollies for your cabin. Day 2 we did games in the sea at Dickys Beach then we did Alpine Team Rescue, pool games then catapulting. Finally on day 3 we did the best things which were archery and caving. We had a great time on camp. - Bronte and Grace
We had such a fun and amazing experience. The activities were so fun, but our top 4 was caving, archery, body boarding and team challenges. The activities were Alpine Team Rescue, pool games and more! As for the extras, every morning at 6:00am, we would go to the beach and have a beach walk. We found a bunch of shells as well. Overall, it was a worthwhile experience and so fun to have with our friends in the cabins. - Sariah and Abigail
