Dear Families,
School Review Report
Last week we received our school review report. Please CLICK HERE to view the one page overview which captures the highlights and the next steps to inform how we can ensure continuous improvement for our students.
During Term 3 and Term 4, we will work with our teachers to look at the feedback from each of the 9 domains. The work that our teachers are currently implementing together to make learning visible for our students is evidence of the strong collegial relationships that we have in our school and is something that we are really proud of.
NAPLAN reports for parents
The reporting of NAPLAN results to parents and carers is changing. You will have received individual student reports this week, showing your child’s achievement in each test domain, according to 4 levels of NAPLAN proficiency: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support. The report will also provide information about student knowledge and skills within each proficiency. A factsheet included with your child’s report will detail the new changes. Find out more at Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).
Communication from the School
As we communicated earlier in the week, there was some data corruption in one of the files in Schoolzine that impacted how the information on Weekly Happenings updated. This has now been corrected. The information in Weekly Happenings is drawn from our school calendar and we endeavour to keep this as up to date as possible. The calendar and the website will be the ‘point of truth’ for our communication and we will utilise our Facebook page to celebrate school achievements.
Kind regards,
Nikki
PBL & Social-Emotional Learning
This fortnight, we have been reviewing the importance of being prepared for learning and how being prepared can help us be successful in our learning journey.

Being prepared looks like:
- Having had a good night’s sleep
- Eaten a healthy breakfast
- Dressing appropriately in the school uniform
- Arriving on time and being outside the room on the first bell at 8:55am
- Having all necessary school items here and ready to work (These include sharp pencils, eraser, wooden ruler, hat and filled water bottle)
- Having the right mindset and attitude for learning
At Craigslea SS:
We are prepared. We manage our time so we can finish on time. We make sure we have all materials and resources that we need so we can start promptly. We set goals to help us be prepared and organised – we set up a simple plan or to do list to get the job done. We keep things tidy – We have a place for everything and put everything in its place.
Active School Travel
Walking Wheeling Wednesdays
Wednesdays at Craigslea, are Walking Wheeling Wednesdays!
Thank you to everyone who participated in PJ Day last week. It was great to see so many people supporting this wonderful cause. Together we have raised $507 to help the Pyjama Foundation fund Pyjama Angels.

August’s Golden Boot will be awarded to the class with highest percentage of scooter/skateboard riders.
How will you actively travel to school?
School Opinion Survey
Thank you to all of those who have already completed the Parent/Caregiver Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, please note that the online surveys will remain open until Friday, 18 August 2023. This is your opportunity to provide feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve.
To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2023.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at school. School computers/tablets will be available.
Protecting our (increasingly younger) children from cyberbullying
The internet has given children and young people new opportunities to learn, play and socialise. However, this increased online presence, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic, also exposes them to new harms and risks. Concerningly, reports to eSafety’s cyberbullying complaints team show younger children are increasingly experiencing negative online behaviour. Reports of serious cyberbullying of children between the ages of eight and 13 years has more than tripled compared to pre-pandemic 2019 – jumping from a little over 200 complaints in 2019 to almost 740 in 2022.
Please take a few minutes to learn more about cyberbullying – what it is, ways to protect your child, and how to get help if your child experiences it.
eSafety is here to help with advice and resources to help you support your family’s online safety.

Sharing Student Information:
From time-to-time parents ask us to provide information about their child to external medical and allied health professionals. When this happens, before we can complete any questionnaires, have a conversation and/or provide observations with their health professionals we need to have a completed consent to share information form signed by the parents.
If you wish for your child’s teaching team to provide information, please provide the following information for each professional that is working with your child and who you think we may need to liaise with over the year:
- Name of treating professional
- Role or position of professional
- Company/organisation/agency they are working for
- Contact details – phone and email
- Address (if possible)
- Date of next appointment or when information is required back to the practitioner.
This information is populated into a consent to share information form ready for parent signature/s. Once the form is returned signed, teaching staff will work on and provide the requested information. Please note we require a minimum of 2 weeks notice for compiling any information or completing any questionnaires/ surveys.
Have a great fortnight of learning and fun,
Natalie Marhinin and Erin Wiles

Prep |
In Prep, students have been exploring materials and their properties. We have been looking at lots of materials that are smooth, flexible and hard. In maths, we have been learning to compare objects that are light and heavy. We are enjoying hefting anything we can find in the classroom. Ask your child what a digraph is. I wonder if they’ll be able to tell you about our new friends ‘ll’, ‘ss’, ‘ff’, ‘ck’ and ‘sh’. |
Year 1 |
We have been exploring and investigating marvellous materials. We planned, tested and reflected on which materials are the best for holding water. In HASS we have been learning about how daily life has changed over time, this week we will be learning how to churn butter! In English we have been working on ‘bumping up’ our character preference writing, by using evidence from the text and making personal connections to the characters. |
Year 2 |
Look out Mum and Dad...we’re learning to be more persuasive! Our writing is all about persuading someone to agree with our point of view using some very clever tricks and devices. In Maths we are learning how to represent numbers in a variety of ways. Push and Pull Forces are our focus in Science and we’ve learned about them in a recent walk to John Goss Reserve. |
Year 3 |
Shopping Time! This week in year 3 we had a ‘Buy Smart’ presentation all about creating a budget and being smart with our money. We really enjoyed creating a budget for a party. We are working on building our learning walls in our classrooms for writing and they are looking fantastic! They include some of our amazing vocabulary words, examples of turning notes into sentences and the structure of an information report. |
Year 3/4 |
We are examining the structural and language features needed to construct an information report. We are looking at subject-specific vocabulary and precise verbs. We are finalising decimals and place value and are moving onto money. Our HaSS lessons will revise using grid coordinates and relative position using a compass. |
Year 4 |
The Year 4 students are practising writing TEEL paragraphs about Australian animals as part of English. In Mathematics, we are continuing to use place value to understand decimals and connect them with fractions. We have also begun investigating how to solve real-world problems involving money. Students are also studying the life cycles of many living things in Science. |
Year 5 |
In English, Year 5 have been analysing language features and structure of Australian Bush Ballads and learning how language features and vocabulary influence interpretations of setting, characters and events. We are learning the difference between area and perimeter and investigating different ways of finding the area and perimeter of different shapes in Maths. |
Year 5/6 |
In 5/6J and 5/6W, students have begun identifying the structural components of news texts and started brainstorming creative language features to include in our own feature articles. Students have also conducted various activities to better understand the complexity of our solar system (and beyond). In the coming weeks, we will start investigating whether any of these far-fetched places in our universe may have the necessary requirements to sustain living things. |
Year 6 |
In Year 6, students have started looking at the structural, language and visual features of different news texts. Students have been investigating how high modality can be used to communicate a strong point of view when writing persuasively. |

Fire ants are one of the world’s most invasive pests and they have the potential to devastate our environment, economy and the outdoor way of life we know and love. To stop the spread of fire ants, the Department of Education is collaborating with the National Fire Ant Eradication Program to manage fire ants across schools within South East Queensland. This important work will help protect our schools and community from the dangers posed by fire ants.
An initial pilot program has treated 46 schools across the Logan, Ipswich, Somerset and Gold Coast City local government areas (Metropolitan and South East education regions). This will expand over the coming years to include additional schools. The treatment consists of applying two rounds of an insect growth regulator which sterilises the fire ant queen and prevents new ants from maturing into adults. These types of products are widely used in mosquito control programs, cockroach treatment and pet flea collars and when used according to instructions, are not harmful to humans, pets or wildlife.
The first round of treatment occurred in early 2023 and round two is being completed during April and May. The fire ant bait is being applied by experienced pest management technicians.
The school treatment program supports efforts to eradicate fire ants within South East Queensland by suppressing the fire ant population in areas until eradication treatment takes place. Under the Biosecurity Act 2014 all Queenslanders have an obligation to manage biosecurity risks. The Department of Education is meeting its obligations by managing fire ants on land it owns or manages.
The National Fire Ant Eradication Program is also running a range of community projects to provide residents in selected suburbs with free fire ant bait to treat their yards to support eradication goals.
