Dear Families,
Welcome back!
I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing break and both you and your children are ready for a fabulous Term 3. Holidays for me are an opportunity to have some down time and refill my bucket with my family and friends. I am excited for the term ahead and working collaboratively with our staff and school community to begin developing our 2024-2027 strategic plan. I will share more information about this as the term progresses.
This week I have visited many of our classes and I am so impressed with our Craigslea SS learners. Our students are curious and motivated and it was great to see everyone focussed and ready to learn.
Year One Outdoor Learning Space
The work on the outdoor learning space is complete and the fences are down – yay! This space will be used during learning time for students to participate in investigations and learning experiences beyond the walls of the classroom. At play time, we will be offering activities for students in this space such as drawing, connect four, small world, blocks and other creative play. This area is not for students to run around in and play chase, as it is not designed for this purpose.
If you are waiting with your children before school in this space can you please ensure that they are sitting safely with you waiting to go into class. Before school supervision for Prep and Year 1 is the Year 1 eating shed and grassed area from 8:30am.
Cyber Safety
Cyber safety is all about teaching our children how to use technology and the internet safely and putting measures in place to protect them from online dangers. There is great information available for parents at the following website www.esafety.gov.au/parents .
Please click HERE for quick tips for parents. The most important thing is to start the conversations with our children.
Student Toilets
To ensure the safety of our students, parents/carers are reminded that student toilets are for student use only. Parents/carers are to use staff toilets which are located near OSHC or Administration.
Kind regards,
Nikki
Welcome back to Term 3! We hope that everyone who had the chance to take a break had a happy and relaxing time. Students and staff have come back to school looking and sounding refreshed and ready to go.
PBL & Social-Emotional Learning
Craigslea SS has a set of four LIFE values to assist students to manage their own behaviour. L - be a Learner, I - be Independent, F - be Friendly and E - be Safe in all Environments.
Our focus for the fortnight is to review what it means to be a Craigslea learner and how we demonstrate the LIFE expectations.
Walking Wheeling Wednesday’s
Wednesdays at Craigslea, are Walking Wheeling Wednesdays!
This Wednesday, 19 July, to make Walking, Wheeling, Wednesday even more fun we are encouraging everyone to come to school in their pyjamas!!
Students are welcome to wear their pyjamas, beanies, onesies, oodies or dressing gowns, but please remind students that they will still need to have covered in shoes and dress that is appropriate for their normal school activities.
Craigslea’s Pyjama Day is running in conjunction with National Pyjama Day (Friday 21 July).
National Pyjama Day is all about wearing your favourite pair of PJs to help The Pyjama Foundation raise much-needed awareness and funds for children in foster care.

There are two ways in which you can show your support and donate to the foundation.
- On the day students are welcome to bring along a gold coin donation and hand it to the student council members who will come to their classrooms.
- Make a donation via the Craigslea State School group fundraising link through the charity’s website found at https://fundraise.thepyjamafoundation.com/fundraisers/craigsleastateschool
The Golden Boot Trophy for July, will be awarded to the class with the highest percentage of active travellers who come to school by walking. Who will it be? 4S are currently in the lead, there are 2 more Wednesdays to find the winning class. How will you actively travel to school?
School Opinion Survey
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 18 August 2023. All families, school staff and students in Year 5 and 6 will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 17 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2023. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at school. School computers/tablets will be available.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines.
The aim of the national data collection is to collect quality information about school students with disability in Australia. This information will help teachers, principals, education authorities and families to better support students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability. The national data collection is an opportunity for schools to review their learning and support systems and processes to continually improve education outcomes for their students with disability.
Our school will be required to collect the following information for each student with a disability:
- the student’s level of education (i.e. primary or secondary)
- the student’s level of adjustment
- the student’s broad type of disability.
Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all students and their families is essential. Personal details such as student names or other identifying information will not be provided to local or federal education authorities.
Online Cybersafety
It has been reported that there are several students using instant messaging via their iPads outside of school hours in an inappropriate manner. Some students may also be accessing several apps that require significant monitoring at home. Although we have initiated and implemented many processes and opportunities to keep our students safe online whilst at school, we require your assistance at home.
Please access the following websites below - ‘The eSafety guide’ and ‘Cyberbullying’
‘The eSafety Guide’ is a regularly updated resource by the Federal Government that outlines apps and their properties that children may be accessing on their devices. It also includes how to protect your information and report harmful content.
Apps Guide - The eSafety Guide | eSafety Commissioner
The ‘Cyberbullying’ website provides information, education and resources on cyberbullying and is useful in guiding cyber safety discussion with your children.

Some important messages for your consideration:
- Start the conversation early - good habits start young. Teach students to ask questions and setup screen time/protocols in your family from an early age.
- Promote respectful communication.
- Be engaged, open and supportive of their online world (ask them about their favourite games, what they do and who they play with).
- Set some rules. Always know your child's username and password login details for every game/app they are on. Ensure devices are used in the common space not away in their bedrooms. As a parent make sure you know how to block and/or unfriend someone.
- Research the games they are accessing to ensure suitability. As a parent do you know all the apps and games your child accesses?
ICAS

Prep |
It is wonderful to see all our prep students reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. Now that we have been at school for 100 day it is time to have a celebration for 100 days smarter. This term in English, we will be exploring ways to write on a topic and to give more detailed descriptions. In our phonics program we have just learned our first digraph ‘ck’. |
Year 1 |
In Year 1 this term we will be exploring narratives. Students will be discussing and writing character preferences for each story. Our HASS topic is ‘Past and Present’. We will be investigating and comparing objects from the past with those from the present, considering how things have changed over time. In Science we are excited to begin our investigation of different materials and their properties. We are looking forward to conducting experiments through inquiry, where we will make predictions, record and share our observations. |
Year 2 |
In English this term we will be learning all about being persuasive. Look out for some convincing arguments about when to go to bed! Our Science topic is ‘Push and Pull Forces’. We are looking forward to learning more about these when we visit John Goss Reserve next week. In HaSS our focus will be on learning about our local area, so this wonderful park will be our first investigation. |
Year 3 |
In English, we are learning about information reports. We will be developing our ability to research places and animals in HASS. In Science, we will be learning about solids, liquids and gases. We are looking forward to our incursion about money and finances next week! |
Year 3/4 |
We are exploring informative texts and endangered animals. In HaSS we will be studying maps at a local and national scale. We are also setting new goals for the term and brainstorming some strategies to help us achieve these. |
Year 4 |
In Year 4, we are studying informative texts in English. We will be practising our note-taking skills by viewing a variety of sources and writing down the most important points to use in our information reports later. In HASS, our focus has moved towards geography. We will be looking at the different types of maps, with a particular focus on the features of the African and South American continents. |
Year 5 |
Year 5 are having an amazing start to the term exploring the big question ‘What is Poetry?’. In Science, we are looking at animal adaptations and in HASS we are exploring the Gold Rush. This links nicely with our first mini unit for Mathematics which is all about maps! |
Year 5/6 |
In 5/6J and 5/6W, students have begun analysing the structural and language features found in feature articles and other news media. In Science, we are excited to begin an inquiry into the living conditions required for organisms to survive...we are interested to know whether any other planets or moons in our solar system may have some of these conditions. |
Year 6 |
In HASS, Year 6 have begun looking at the issues Australia faced before the country federated. We will be interpreting a range of historical sources and identifying the contributions made by Sir Henry Parkes and how his actions may have led to the formation of the Australian democratic government. |

Fire ants are one of the world’s most invasive pests and they have the potential to devastate our environment, economy and the outdoor way of life we know and love. To stop the spread of fire ants, the Department of Education is collaborating with the National Fire Ant Eradication Program to manage fire ants across schools within South East Queensland. This important work will help protect our schools and community from the dangers posed by fire ants.
An initial pilot program has treated 46 schools across the Logan, Ipswich, Somerset and Gold Coast City local government areas (Metropolitan and South East education regions). This will expand over the coming years to include additional schools. The treatment consists of applying two rounds of an insect growth regulator which sterilises the fire ant queen and prevents new ants from maturing into adults. These types of products are widely used in mosquito control programs, cockroach treatment and pet flea collars and when used according to instructions, are not harmful to humans, pets or wildlife.
The first round of treatment occurred in early 2023 and round two is being completed during April and May. The fire ant bait is being applied by experienced pest management technicians.
The school treatment program supports efforts to eradicate fire ants within South East Queensland by suppressing the fire ant population in areas until eradication treatment takes place. Under the Biosecurity Act 2014 all Queenslanders have an obligation to manage biosecurity risks. The Department of Education is meeting its obligations by managing fire ants on land it owns or manages.
The National Fire Ant Eradication Program is also running a range of community projects to provide residents in selected suburbs with free fire ant bait to treat their yards to support eradication goals. For the latest information on community projects or for more information about fire ants visit: https://www.fireants.org.au
