Dear Parents/Carers,
Thank You!
At Craigslea, we always have reason to be thankful. Last week, during World Teachers' Day we had the opportunity to thank our teachers for their commitment to our students during an afternoon tea. Our P and C President Elizabeth Lynch, presented our teachers with World Teachers' Day stickers and badges and Ms Green, Mrs Abdy and myself made each teacher a book full of messages from their students demonstrating what they appreciate about them. The looks on the teachers' faces as they were presented with their book in their classroom or on assembly was priceless. Click the gallery below to see some of these messages.
In the next week, we are thanking our Cleaners, Tuckshop and Uniform Shop Staff for how they go above and beyond for staff, students and their families. On Monday November 8, between 6 and 7pm, the school leadership team is holding a function to thank our volunteers with some light refreshments. Please CLICK HERE to RSVP for this event. At this stage the function will be held in the staff room dependent on numbers.
It is important at this time of year, to recognise that it is much more difficult for schools to deliver quality outcomes without the contributions made by volunteers and the additional tasks taken on voluntarily by the paid staff. Our school is so fortunate to have so many of these wonderful people.

In the coming weeks we will be commencing the interview process for School Captains, Vice-Captains, House Captains and Music Captains. There are approximately 90 students in Year 6 and just 16 of these students can achieve a Captain position. The selection process is rigorous and requires that students expecting to be considered for Captain positions have upheld the highest standards in Year 5 in terms of their engagement in learning, conduct in the classroom and playground, their social relationships and their ability to lead others. All students who have nominated for these positions had to submit a PowerPoint, video or written essay and will attend an interview with the school leadership team. As a result of these processes, students will be informed of the requirement to prepare a speech so that students in Years 5 and 6, 2022 can then vote for their student of choice for that position, after they have heard the speech.
Students nominating for Tech Crew will attend a trial taking place during the weeks 7 and 9 assemblies. A decision will me made after that time.
Senior Leaders will be selected after the the Captain and Tech Crew processes are completed. Students who do not achieve Senior Leadership will receive feedback and will be supported to put together an action plan to work towards achieving this goal by the end of Term 1 or Term 2.
Students will also be able to apply to be Bridge Builders and based on their application and demonstrated ability to resolve their own conflict, will be put forward to attend the two days of Bridge Builder training. Mrs Jocelyn Chirnside (our Bridge Builders Coach) recommends those students to us that best demonstrated these abilities during the training to take on the Bridge Builder role.
At this time, there will be disappointment for some students who do not receive the role for which they applied. It is important that parents put it in perspective for their children and reiterate there is just 16 Captain roles for 90 students. Students in Year 5 were told at the start of the year and throughout, the standards of classroom and playground behaviour that are expected from Captains and Leaders at this school. If they miss out this time, it means there are just not where they need to be to take on leadership-yet. They have another opportunity early next year or in their high school years.
Have a good week,
Kathy
Social-Emotional Learning
This week, I addressed the Yr 2 & 3 students around caring for this environment. It is their play area so I have asked for their assistance to help see that everybody helps care for the new plants and the reconciliation hands that OSHC children have contributed to the yarning circle space.
Booklists and Student Resource Scheme
Craigslea, like many schools, is a booklist and Student Resource Scheme (SRS) school. 2022 Booklists have already been sent home but you can also find them on the school website.
Pending approval at our November P and C Meeting, parents will be invoiced for the SRS on day 1 of the new year. Parents who wish to opt out will need to complete a form (even if done in previous years). Opting out requires that parents purchase the SRS resources themselves. Please note that this is a more expensive way of purchasing the resources.
Giving Our Children A Voice
We now have the 2021 school opinion survey data which again, has been mostly heartening. As a result, we have started meeting with the Senior Leaders, Student Councillors and the Bridge Builders to get their thoughts around how we might be able to improve on those items that are not as high in agreement as we would like. From this, the Positive Behaviour for Learning team will use the feedback to draft the action plan for 2022.
Today we thank our Cleaners with some messages and afternoon tea!
Year 1 Excursion To Caboolture Historical Centre
This Semester in HASS we have been learning about the recent past, the present and the near future within the contexts of the student's own world. Students have been exploring changes that occur over time in relation to themselves, their own families and places. At the Caboolture Historical Centre we learnt about Australian history and in particular the history of the local area. We completed a wide range of activities including re-enactments, assisting with washing duties in the old time laundry, learning about bush rangers, watching the blacksmith, panning for gems and riding in a train. We also had some time in the afternoon to explore the village and some of the students' highlights were the school, hospital and the police station.

Year 4 Big Bang Incursion
Linking to their classroom learning about forces, Year 4 had an exciting experience at the "Big Bang" incursion today.
Year 5 Camp Currimundi
The Year 5s had an amazing time on camp at Currimundi this week. We all stepped outside our comfort zones and showed what true bravery means. Working together was the key to our success. The food was also fantastic, as you can tell from the following quotes…
“This food is the best I’ve ever had outside of home.”
“My Mum’s lasagne is the best but this is almost as good.”
“50/10 for the food”
Question: “What have you loved about camp?” Answer: “The food.”
Some favourite moments of camp …
Let’s give a shout out to camp Currimundi, the most fun camp in the world. You can face your fears, have an amazing time and the most important thing of all, have an adventure. Some of the activities you can do are canoeing, pool games, high ropes, giant swing and catapults. Tapasya
Hi my name is Sophie and camp was amazing. The greatest activity was the giant swing. I thought I would never do it because of my fear of heights. When I saw lots of people going to the top I really wanted to try and when it was my go I went to the top. People were saying to look down and I did. Now I don’t have a fear of heights, I want to go back again!

Day for Daniel
We remember Daniel a 12 year student who was catching a bus near his home to a shopping centre on the Sunshine Coast, was taken by an adult and never returned. We remember Daniel so we can teach children how to keep themselves safe in all situations.

We can now write our opinions down using multiple sentences! In Maths, we are comparing how long things take and exploring what we do at different times of the day. |
YEAR 1 |
In Year 1 we are continuing to write some great Procedures. This week we wrote a procedure on How to Make a Pizza. We are learning to use a variety of verbs, adjectives and adverbs to make our writing interesting. In our Mathematics we are interpreting number stories and identifying the important information we need to know. At home we can practise our doubles plus 1 to solve problems. |
YEAR 2 |

YEAR 3 |
We are creating our Great Barrier Reef sensory poem for our assessment in English, lots of alliteration and onomatopoeia. We are getting very good at working out if we have conducted a fair test in Science and we are saving the planet in HASS with our calls to action around plastic pollution. |
YEAR 4 |
Hello, week 5! Where did you come from? We have been learning about ways to collect, record and display data in Maths and are looking forward to our Big Bang Incursion this week. There are some busy times ahead of us! |
Year 5 |
Well, what an amazing few days we had at camp! We had some wonderful experiences together, collaborating and participating in many challenging and fun activities. We ate heaps of delicious food and are extremely proud of the our achievements. |
YEAR 5/6 |
The year 6s focused on Maths and HASS while the year 5s were having a ball on camp this last week, revising units of measurement and learning about Australian history and the impact on migration and the rights of women. Year 6 Science is continuing with our learning of the impact to Earth’s surface during quake and cyclones, while the year 5s are creating their ‘creature’ to ensure they can adapt and thrive in a particular environment. Writing continues to be a huge focus in all our subjects where we are learning to deepen our writing of TEEL paragraphs to ensure that we provide a thorough explanation and justification of our ideas. |
YEAR 6 |
Here we are…half way through the final term of the year. In the Year 6 classes we have been working on our English writing tasks (writing an evaluative essay about an advertisement) and in Maths, working through a busy guided inquiry question about measurement. In both HaSS and Science we have been able to cover certain aspects of the assessment, but also power through some amazing lessons on migration and women’s rights (HaSS) and cyclones and earthquakes (science). Not long to go now. |
