Dear Parents/Carers,
Workplace Health and Safety
Mrs Joyce is our school’s Workplace Health and Safety Representative. Each year a detailed Annual Safety Assessment and Action Plan is prepared for the following year. Mrs Joyce chairs a meeting each term to ensure items from the Action Plan are being implemented as well as to address any health and safety issues for staff and students as they arise. Health and Safety incidents are recorded and actioned on a database and more serious incidents are automatically forwarded to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland for further investigation and action if required. This is an essential part of school operations which often happens silently in the background. Today we had a fire drill with the whole school evacuating to the oval in light rain. Previous drills triggered the replacement of our fire alert system as it could not be heard in all parts of the school. We now have a loud, whooping sound which can be heard all over the neighbourhood! Parents/Carers are encouraged to report any potential hazards that they note in their movement around the school grounds to school administration.
Facilities
We had an extensive meeting with the Department of Education’s Infrastructure Advisor last week. The outcomes of soil testing and plans for ongoing rectification around the school was high on the agenda with future works to be undertaken in front of the school, between the library and the Kubbi and between Year 1 and 2. Plans for a covered shelter stretching along the front fence on Hamilton Road for pick up and drop off have been discussed as well as a design concept to make the area between Yr 1 and 2 a more attractive space. Additionally, an architect has created some initial plans for the Administration Building to put it in line with that of new schools. I’ve attached these plans to this newsletter. We are hopeful some of these projects will commence within the next six to twelve months.
Upcoming Events
June 10: Year 4 to 6 assembly-Students will begin to move up at 1.45pm to the assembly hall for Years 4 to 6 Assembly and assembly will commence once everyone is seated. There will be a Years 3 to 6 Badge Presentation for Student Council. Parents are invited to pin their badge on their child. There will be a Year 5 performance and awards from the Week 5 and 7 newsletter will be presented to Year 4 to 6 students.
June 10: 6.00pm: Year 3 to 6 Reading Workshop for Parents via Zoom. This will be led by our Head of Curriculum Sarah Abdy.
June 15: 9.00am: Cross Country and Colour Run. Each year level will run their competitive cross-country lap first and then their second lap will be their Colour Run. The P and C will identify adults who will safely throw the colour at students as they run their second lap. Dressing in old white clothes is encouraged. Students who don’t wish to have colour thrown at them, can wear uniform. There will be an 8.30 safety briefing (for the P and C identified adults throwing the colour) at the shelter near the tennis court. Students can run, dance as we will have some music pumping out the speakers to motivate everyone! We can’t wait! It is a fun way to raise funds for our school.
June 17: 9.00am: Junior Sports Day.
In Week 9, the school leadership team will proof-read and then in Week 10 distribute report cards to parents/ carers. Teachers will have their planning days with the Head of Curriculum to plan for Term 3. The Senior Leadership Team (Principal, Deputy Principal, Head of Curriculum and Head of Inclusion) will undertake Walkthroughs through each classroom in the school to talk to students and teachers, peruse their planning and work to provide feedback on the teaching and learning of Reading and Writing in our school.
A busy time in the next few weeks. Have a good week,
Kathy

Social-Emotional Learning
Have an enquiring mind. The world needs problem-solvers. How can we do something better?
To be a problem-solver, you need to use a combination of knowledge, skills and imagination. Imagination is not just about fantasy characters. Imagination is about lateral thinking. Considering possibilities that may not have been used before.
-
- Knowledge (or know how to find the information you need)
- Imagination
- Skills

Show persistence and self-discipline to achieve your goals and do your best in your learning. We all have the brain to build on these skills. See below.
Our brains are so sophisticated, we can do anything we want to. We just need to use it and look after it.
- Eat healthy foods. They contain vitamins and minerals that are important for the nervous system.
- Get a lot of playtime (exercise).
- Wear a helmet when you ride your bike or play other sports that require head protection.
- Use your brain by doing challenging activities, such as puzzles, reading, playing music, making art, or anything else that gives your brain a workout
Bridge Strategy: Ignore, don’t react
As adults, I think we use this strategy often. It is effective.
Children need to learn though that you only ignore poor or silly behaviour. They should not be ignoring someone who is trying to negotiate with them, or speak to them about something that is upsetting them. In this case, the other child is actually trying to be assertive or resolve a situation of conflict.

Reading Goals
All students have their new reading goal which they will focus on over the next 5 weeks. Please ask your child about their goal and the strategies that they are using to achieve this goal. Each fortnight your child is receiving feedback from their class teacher about their reading and how to improve. If you have not been informed of your child's reading goal, please contact the class teacher.
Building a Love of Reading
We all contribute immensely to a child's reading journey. The critical role as a parent of caregiver in advocating for your children's reading success cannot be overestimated. It has a direct impact on the ease and confidence with which they pursue their reading and writing.
It is the joy and love of sharing a good book on a nightly basis that sets the foundation for their reading success, and ensure that reading is given the priority it deserves. Reading regularly with someone who cares is the inspiration that all readers deserve.
For further information on how you can support your child at home with their reading, please read the following article sourced from the Primary English Teaching Association Australia (PETTA).

How do teachers give feedback to my child in their writing?
Year 3 - 6
Teaching the critical aspect of writing within learning areas across Years 3–6 involves demonstrating and explicitly teaching the processes involved in creating a written text.
This includes modelled, shared and interactive writing, with opportunities for students to participate in guided and independent writing tasks.
Teachers initially monitor and assess students’ writing for ideas, grammatical features, structure and cohesion and, based on what students can do, plan to support them in response.
Teachers provide regular feedback
Effective feedback focuses on:
- how well students understand and perform the literacy skill
- the process used to apply the student's understanding
- the student's self-monitoring skills
- the student's ability to personally evaluate their writing
Providing feedback about writing focuses on how students effectively and independently use their knowledge and skills during each stage of their writing tasks - planning, drafting, revising, editing and proofreading and publishing.
Below are some classroom writing examples from Year 4, including the teacher feedback. In this writing activity students are focusing on writing a historical recount linked to their HASS (Humanities and Social Science) learning. Students are learning about Australia's past and are required to research and then present their understandings of history through a written recount.
During the planning and drafting of their writing students are given multiple opportunities to personally evaluate their own writing and consult with the teacher to improve their writing.
All students are working well to improve their writing.
Ask your child about their writing.
Can they tell you what their next steps are to improve in their writing?
If you would like more information about your child's writing or any aspect of their learning please contact your child's classroom teacher.
Have a great week,
