Dear Craigslea Community,
Winter has certainly arrived this week with chilly starts to our days. We are at the end of week 7 and our students are commencing assessment of this term’s learning. This can be a challenging time for students as the focus moves from learning to demonstrating what they know and can do.
During assessment periods we can often see a change in student engagement in school. Our teachers are very supportive of their students during assessment periods. This includes the language they use to talk about assessment and the strategies they employ to assist students to undertake tasks successfully. Giving students multiple opportunities to show what they know, breaking larger tasks into smaller chunks, utilising teacher aides to support task completion and spacing assessments so that students don’t feel overwhelmed are all ways our teachers support our students. If you notice a change in your child’s attitude to school during this time it is important to contact your class teacher to discuss ways, we can work together to support them. At the end of this term all students will receive their Semester 1 report card. These will be sent out in Week 10.
Enrichment Opportunities
We have a very busy end to our term with lots of whole school events and enrichment opportunities for our students to engage in. Next Wednesday groups of our Year 5 students will participate in the Readers Cup competing against students from other local schools. On Wednesday we also welcome the Suncorp Tech Team to our school. They will speak to all our students about career opportunities in technology fields before mentoring a group of our year 4 students to innovatively solve a design challenge. Our Music team will be busy sharing their terms work through pop up concerts and virtual assembly performances over the next few weeks.

Road Safety Reminder
Please remember to use the lights to cross Hamilton Road at all times during drop off and pick up. With cars pulling in and out of the Stop Drop and Go zone and the traffic congestion along the front of our school it is important that we teach our students safe crossing practices.
P&C Appreciation Day
Last Friday was P&C appreciation day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderfully supportive P&C. Without their support we would not be able to do as much as we do for our students. The P&C is run by a band of volunteers and we are very grateful for the time and effort they give to our school
Uniform Reminder
With the cooler weather arriving we have noticed a number of our students are wearing non-uniform jumpers. The expectations of our school dress code include the wearing of a navy-coloured jumper with no writing or decoration or the school jumper. We ask parents and carers to support us in ensuring our students wear their uniform with pride.
POSTPONED: Term 2 Coffee & Connect Session (2)
Unfortunately, next week’s Coffee & Connect Session scheduled for Friday 7 June will be postponed until Term 3. Please keep an eye out on our Schoolzine calendar for the new date.
Our 2024 Priorities
High expectations and learning success for all: Strengthening partnerships between the school and community to enhance learning opportunities for all students.
This year we have opened the Sensitivity unit as a flexible learning environment for students to access for social and emotional learning, supported play programs and small group interventions. Our students are enjoying accessing this space as an option to support their positive engagement in learning.
As your new principal it has been a priority for me to connect with our community and provide opportunities to invite community voice into our planning and community presence in our classrooms as partners in learning.
This year to achieve this we have introduced:
- Coffee & Connect sessions
- Community Surveys
- Show & Shine Afternoons
- School sharing at P&C
- Principal Afternoon Teas
- More assemblies including whole school and sector assemblies
As a school team we are committed to continue to expand these connections over the next 4 years as the partnership between home and school is critical for positive student engagement and success in learning.
“In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening. So rather than thinking, oh, I’m going to reveal my weaknesses you say, wow, here’s a chance to grow.” Carol Dweck

Under 8's Day
Under 8's day was a wonderful celebration of being Under 8! Thank you to everyone who came and joined in the wonderful activities.
Learning @Craigslea P-2
It's been a busy few weeks in our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 classes. Our Prep's have been developing their oral language skills by orally retelling stories including Farmer John's Tractor. In Year 1, our students have also been focusing on retelling a story and the need for stories to be sequenced in a particular order for them to make sense. Students are adding detail to their writing to paint a better picture for their readers. Finally our Year 2 students have been investigating the different ways authors describe characters and the language of preference.
Coming up, the Year 2's will be visiting John Goss Reserve. This is always a great morning with lots of investigation of push and pull forces.
2025 Prep Interviews
Mel and I have started our interviews for our newest Craigslea students. If you know of a student who is ready to start prep in 2025, please let them know that enrolments are open for next year. Come and see our friendly staff in our beatutiful new office space and grab an enrolment form.
ICAS 2024
ICAS is an online academic competition that gives students the opportunity to challenge their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science and Digital Technologies. We will be conducting ICAS at Craigslea in 2024. An remail for registration has been emailed out to parents.

Craigslea Learners
Over the last fortnight, I have had the opportunity, along with members of the Leadership Team, to have a conversation with students from Years 4-6 about their learning. We asked students how they're going with their learning, where do they go to get help when they need it, and what are their next steps are for their writing. It was wonderful to hear students talking about using the Learning Walls for resources and identifying their next steps for improvement. It was great to see the growth mindset of the students as they celebrated what they were doing well and considered what they could do to continue to improve.
Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week
National Sorry Day is held each year on the 26th May to remember and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we know as “The Stolen Generations”.
National Reconciliation Week, held each year from 27 May to 3 June, is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort. These two dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey. 27 May 1967: the successful 1967 referendum, when Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 3 June 1992: The High Court Mabo decision, which recognised native title and the acknowledgement that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation.
The Australian Curriculum includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority which provides opportunities for all students to deepen their knowledge of Australia by learning about the world’s oldest continuous living cultures. It engages with Australian First Nations Peoples’ knowledges, experiences, values and perspectives. Through the Australian Curriculum, students learn that contemporary First Nations Australian communities are strong, resilient, rich and diverse. It also allows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to see themselves and their cultures reflected in the curriculum.
Reconciliation Week is a great time for us to pause and reflect on the past, to understand the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to progress toward Reconciliation as a school community.

PBL & Social Emotional Learning
The focus for the fortnight is: Be Safe in all Environments - I Keep My Hands and Feet to Myself.
At Craigslea, we emphasize the importance of children learning to keep their hands and feet to themselves. This fundamental aspect of personal conduct plays a crucial role in fostering a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
Promoting respect and boundaries: When children learn to keep their hands and feet to themselves, they are also learning about personal boundaries and respect for others. This understanding is essential for their social development, helping them to build healthy relationships based on mutual respect and consent.
Ensuring safety: Physical interactions, even when intended playfully, can sometimes lead to accidental harm. By encouraging children to maintain their personal space, we reduce the risk of injuries and create a safer environment where all students can feel secure and focused on learning.
Developing self-control: Learning to manage impulses is a key part of emotional development. When children practice keeping their hands and feet to themselves, they are developing self-control and emotional regulation skills. These abilities are crucial for handling conflicts and frustrations in a constructive manner.
Enhancing focus and learning: A classroom where students respect personal space is a more conducive environment for learning. Fewer disruptions mean that children can concentrate better on their studies, leading to improved academic performance and a more enjoyable educational experience for everyone.
How you can help: We greatly appreciate your support in reinforcing this important lesson at home. Encourage your children to be mindful of their actions and to respect others' personal space. Discuss the reasons why this behaviour is important and praise them when they demonstrate self-control and respect for others.
Together, we can ensure that our children grow up understanding the value of respect, safety, and self-discipline, which will serve them well throughout their lives.
The SEL focus for the fortnight is: Having a Growth Mindset.
The beliefs children have about intelligence, effort, and struggle impact the choices they make about learning. People tend to hold one of two different beliefs about intelligence:
- Children with a growth mindset believe that intelligence can be developed. These students see school as a place to develop their abilities and think of challenges as opportunities to grow.
- Children with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence is fixed at birth and doesn’t change or changes very little with practice. These students see school as a place where their abilities are evaluated, they focus on looking smart over learning, and they interpret mistakes are a sign that they lack talent.
Children who understand that the brain can get smarter—who have a growth mindset—do better in school because they have an empowering perspective on learning. They focus on improvement and see effort as a way to build their abilities. They see failure as a natural part of the learning process. In contrast, students who have a fixed mindset—those who believe that intelligence is fixed—tend to focus on judgment. They're more concerned with proving that they are smart or hiding that they're not. And that means they tend to avoid situations in which they might fail or might have to work hard.
Many studies show that children who have a growth mindset respond differently in challenging situations and do better in school over time.
The way parents talk about ability and learning can have powerful effects on their kids’ beliefs. Below are three ways parents can instil a growth mindset. And remember, developing a growth mindset in yourself and in your kids is a process that takes time. Have a growth mindset about developing a growth mindset!
- Recognize your own mindset: Be mindful of your own thinking and of the messages you send with your words and actions.
- Praise the process: Praising kids for being smart suggests that innate talent is the reason for success, while focusing on the process helps them see how their effort leads to success.
- Model learning from failure: When parents talk positively about making mistakes, kids start to think of mistakes as a natural part of the learning process.
