Welcome back to Term 2. We have had a great start and it has been wonderful to see the students and teachers focused on the next steps in their learning. As the weather has (thankfully!) been a bit cooler, it has also been fabulous to see more of our students out on the oval playing sports. I may even consider starting up my hand ball challenges again
Travelling to school
As we return to school and the weather is much cooler, many more students may be walking or riding to school. If your child is walking to school with an older sibling, please have a chat with them about getting to school safely. It is important that students do not stop along the way to play. It is also a good opportunity to chat about reporting anything they see or hear that doesn’t feel safe.
School gates and supervision
Our school staff are rostered on to duty at our school gates before and after school. Students who are still waiting to be collected at 3:15pm are walked to the office and parents called. A decision has been made to redirect supervision from the gate at Buran St into the school ground as there were not a lot of families using this entrance. Hamilton Rd, Ballinger St, and Kittabilla St are all supervised by school staff. We also have staff supervising students in the Yr 6 covered area, Yr 2/3 covered area and Cool Courts from 8:30am – 8:50am before the start of the school day.
School Review
All Queensland state schools and centres are reviewed by the Department of Education at least once every 4 years and is in line with 4 year Strategic Plan. This term in week 6, we will participate in our School Review. The reviews are conducted by experienced school principals. The review will provide feedback on school performance and data and the reviewers will speak with a range of school community members including staff, parents and students. This will provide guidance for our school and community discussions and the direction of the next strategic plan.
P&C Executive
On behalf of our school community, we thank our P&C committee for their contributions last year. Last term the Annual General Meeting was held and we acknowledged the efforts of the outgoing executive, and welcomed newly elected positions for 2023.
I am pleased to announce the 2023 elected members:
Joel Miller (President)
Raechal Dare (Vice-President)
Charmaine Manewell (Vice-President)
Sophie Ni (Treasurer)
Kate Tavendale (Secretary)
Parents are encouraged and welcome to join the P&C. The next meeting will be held on Monday May 8 at 7pm in the Outside School Hours Care Building.
Nikki
Welcome back to the start of what promises to be a very busy and exciting term of teaching and learning. It has been wonderful to see the children return to school refreshed, rested and ready for learning. The information teachers have gained over the past term will help to inform and enhance the teaching and learning for this term.
We would like to welcome the new families who have joined us at Craigslea. We trust that you will enjoy being part of our vibrant school community.
PBL & Social-Emotional Learning
Be a Learner - I set goals and work towards them.
Goals come in many forms; they may be purely academic, social, or goals even may have to do with character building. All students need to be explicitly taught how to choose, set, and reflect on goals. It is not an instinctive skill, even for most adults.
A goal is an outcome, something that will make a difference as a result of achieving it. It can’t be too ambitious to be out of reach, but also not so simple that it does not challenge. A goal has to be realistic with a stretch, requiring effort and focus to achieve it. That’s why goals need timeframes and measurable action steps along the way so that we can keep track of progress and make adjustments as necessary.
By setting goals, measuring and celebrating their achievements, students are able to see what they have done and what they are capable of. Seeing their results gives the confidence and assurance that they need to believe they can achieve higher goals.
At Craigslea SS every student has an individual reading goal. If your child hasn’t yet shared their new reading goal for Term 2 with you, ask them to share it with you and explain what they are working on to achieve this goal. Remember to celebrate their achievements too!
Active School Travel
Walking Wheeling Wednesday’s
Wednesdays at Craigslea, are Walking Wheeling Wednesdays! Our school is a part of the Brisbane City Council initiative – Active School Travel.
Walking, biking, or scooting to school not only helps to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution but also provides a great opportunity for physical activity and socialising with friends and neighbours. By choosing to travel actively to school, you can help to promote a more sustainable and active lifestyle for yourself and for our community.
To support active travel, we have put together some tips to help make your journey safe and enjoyable:
- Plan your route: Use our school map to find safe walking and biking routes to school. Try to avoid busy roads or intersections and always use designated crosswalks and bike lanes where available.
- Get your gear ready: Make sure your bike or scooter is in good condition and that you have a helmet that fits properly.
- Travel in a group: Consider walking or biking with friends or neighbours. This can be a fun way to socialise and provides additional safety when traveling in a group.
- Stay visible: If you are biking or scooting, make sure you have lights or reflectors on your bike or scooter to make yourself visible to others on the road.
We hope that you will consider active travel as a healthy and sustainable way to get to school. Let's work together to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and promote a more active lifestyle for our school community.
This term there will be two special event Walking Wheeling Wednesdays, make a note of these and look out for more information closer to the date.
Term 2:

Wednesday 10 May |

Wednesday 21 June |
Support Your Team (Points for sports house) |
Each Wednesday, classes are surveyed on how students travelled to school. The class with the highest percentage of active travellers are acknowledge with our AST Star Trophy and the use of our sports/games box for the week.
This term we are introducing a new incentive to get even more students actively travelling to school. This initiative is our Golden Boot Trophy (thanks to our wonderful AST parent rep Jen for making this). For a class to be the recipient of the Golden Boot Trophy and afternoon game with one of the leadership team members, they will need to be the class that has over the month, had the highest percentage for actively travelling to school by a certain mode. For May this will be the highest % of walkers (if you park and stride this will be included in this count) and for the month of June we will be looking for the class with the highest % of bike riders.
How will you actively travel on Wednesdays?

Prep |
Our amazing prep children have been busily reconnecting with their friends as they begin learning new content. This term in English, our students will start learning foundation sentence writing skills. Children will also start bringing home levelled home readers to support their developing word recognition. |
Year 1 |
Year 1 are eagerly watching the construction progress of the outdoor learning area and discussing how we can use the space when it is finished. In English we are learning to retell stories and in Maths we are starting off with skip counting in tens, fives and twos. Science this term will have us observing the differences between day and night and for Hass we will be planting and caring for our gardens. |
Year 2 |
The year two classes have been learning a dance with Mrs Doyle called “Catch a Crayon”. Now we’ve started reading about the crayons that Duncan has lost or broken. Deciding which crayon is our favourite has been tricky because they all have interesting stories! We have started comparing the crayons and stating our preference. In Maths we’ve continued working on different number patterns. In Science we can’t wait to see what happens to our caterpillars! |
Year 3 |
Year 3 have had an amazing start to the term. In English, we are learning all about narratives and reading Kumiko and the Dragon. In Maths we are starting off the term by looking at different types of measurement and Science we will be investigating whether we are the only living things at our school. |
Year 3/4 |
We have started exploring narratives in which the characters are on a journey. We explored the properties of multiplying odd and even numbers and used some problem-solving strategies. We got excited about discovering the convict history of the Brisbane/Moreton Bay region as we came up with some inquiry questions. |
Year 4 |
Year 4 have started the term by using our understanding of odd and even numbers to solve equations in Mathematics. In English, we have read a historical narrative about child convicts. We will be writing our own historical stories later in the term. Our Science unit has led us to discuss the properties and uses of different materials. |
Year 5 |
Year 5 are off to an amazing start with our learning. In English, we are learning all about being persuasive and giving students a voice to make a positive change. In Mathematics, we have been looking at shape and symmetry and creating educational videos and in Science we are learning all about SPACE! |
Year 5/6 |
In 5/6J and 5/6W, we have hit the ground running for Term 2. In Science, we have started looking at the properties of solids, liquids and gases and how these may undergo physical or chemical changes when heat is added or removed. In HASS, we are conducting our own inquiry into the best types of sustainable travel choices and what this might look like in the creation of sustainable cities in the future. Some of us might very well turn into urban planners! |
Year 6 |
In Year 6, students have started looking at the target audience and purpose of different text types. We will be working on comparing literary and informative texts by analysing their text structures, language features and visual features. We are also off and away on our Technologies inquiry into a community problem. We are excited to start building our apps later in the term. |
