Dear Families,
School Leaders
Last week we held our Badge Ceremony for our 2023 Year 6 School Leaders. This was an opportunity to recognise the students who have been elected to these positions and present them with their badges. I spoke to the leaders about the importance of wearing their badge with pride and also the idea that leadership goes beyond just wearing a badge. I am confident these young people in our school are going to continue to act with kindness and honesty and inspire their peers and younger students in our school to be the best Craigslea learners they can be. Thank you to our parents who were able to attend and present the leadership badges to their child.

Year One Outdoor Learning Area
Work will begin on the Year One outdoor learning area in the April school vacation period. During the initial phase of this works, access to the school site will be restricted, including our OSHC Vacation program. We acknowledge that this will present challenges for some families and our OSHC co-ordinator, Kylie, is working on some solutions for children to attend other programs in the area. We thank you for your understanding as this space will be a fantastic addition to our school environment.
Kind Regards,
Nikki
NAPLAN
Please find below the NAPLAN timetable that will be in operation in week 8 and 9. If your child is in either Year 3 or Year 5, please make sure they arrive at school on time. Please reminder your child that this is just one piece of assessment and that their classroom teachers know them best. Their day to day, week by week classroom work is more telling of who they are as a learner across the 3 domains of academic, social, and emotional development and growth than any NAPLAN assessment.
Wednesday 15th March – Writing 3s and 5s – 9:30am
Thursday 16th March – Reading 3s and 5s – 9:30am
Friday 17th March – Language Conventions 3s and 5s – 9:30am
Monday 20th March – Numeracy 3s and 5s – 9:30am
If your child is away for the scheduled test, they will be able to complete the NAPLAN tests up until 23rd March 2023.
We ask that our community respects the testing times and keeps any visits to the school at a minimum. If you have any questions regarding NAPLAN, please do not hesitate to contact Sarah Abdy – sabdy2@eq.edu.au.
PBL & Social-Emotional Learning
The focus for the fortnight is:
Be a Friend – We speak positively and politely to each other.
There is always a reason to smile. The politeness and respectful courtesies given by the students each morning as they start the day are a reason someone smiles everyday at our school. I want to extend our appreciation of the care and time given by families to nurturing values that will continue to stand our students in good stead.
This fortnight, students are focusing on the importance of speaking positively and politely. Students are encouraged to speak positively and politely to all students, staff and visitors at CSS always and in all settings. We can make others happy or hurt their feelings when we speak. Students will understand that speaking unkindly can affect how people feel and that it is always important to be kind and fair.
BridgeBuilders - Ask them to STOP
When our friends do something that we do not like it is important that we ask them to STOP. This tells your friends what you don’t like. It creates boundaries. Children are often encouraged to tell someone to stop if they are being hurt, whether it be through conflict or bullying behaviours. In actual fact, this is one of the hardest skills to implement and does not always work for them, because it requires an understanding of a number of skills to implement correctly and also because a child cannot choose another person’s behaviour, only their own. However, it is very important that your child knows how to ask someone to stop, so they can be clear to communicate their boundaries.
Tips to teach this skill at home:
- Teach children to stand bravely. The biggest form of communication is their body language.
- Demonstrate to your child the different tones or sounds their voice can make when asking someone to stop. It could be whiney, sarcastic, angry or frustrated. Using a calm, brave tone of voice is empowering.
- Help them to think about the words they use. They need to be clear about what they want the person to stop.
- Remind children to finish with the word “thanks” rather than “please”.
Validating this learning empowers your child with valuable skills to learn how to "Ask Them to STOP" and be empowered for life!
Active School Travel
Bling your RIDE to School Day
Decorate your ride and ride to school on Wednesday 29 March
To celebrate the last Walking, Wheeling Wednesday of the term and National Ride to School day we are planning a day full of fun and colour where students, teachers and parents will discover the fun of riding to school.
We are inviting all students and families to Bling Your Ride to School on Wednesday 29 March 2023 to coincide with our Active School Travel Day. Everyone is encouraged to dress up their bikes, scooters, wheelchairs with bright, colourful decorations. The best decorated ride from P-3 and Years 4-6 will win a prize, so start planning your creations!
Brisbane City Council is also sponsoring scooter skills and bike skills workshops for selected grades on this day. More information and how to sign up to come.
We know that everyone is different, and there are many ways you can actively travel to school. How will you actively travel next Wednesday?

Prep |
In InitiaLit, Prep has been busy learning their first four sounds, and are beginning to discriminate between each sound through pictures sorts. Students have also been practicing their newly learned sounds to decode three sound words and to blend them back together. |
Year 1 |
In HaSS, Year Ones have been hard at work learning how to draw a map using a bird’s eye view perspective – tricky business! In Maths, we are practicing our Rainbow Facts and Doubles, to help us answer word problems more efficiently. We are also looking forward to the Bunyaville ‘My Patch’ Incursion happening next week! |
Year 2 |
Counting in tens is easy for most of us when we start at ten. What happens if we start at number six? What happens if we start at six and count in fives? We’ve been exploring different counting patterns and different ways to represent numbers. Our narratives are coming together now as we attempt putting all the paragraphs together to write a complete imaginative text. Our investigations in science have included finding out which materials are waterproof. What can you make to protect yourself from getting wet in the rain? |
Year 3 |
In English, Year Threes have been working hard at completing a full paragraph using the PEEL format. This week we have started including our opinion statement as our introduction into our persuasive text writing. In Maths, we have been using many strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Year Threes have been exploring shadows in science and having fun tracing a buddy’s shadow outside. It’s getting closer and closer to our excursion! We are super excited! |
Year 3/4 |
We are not far away from our excursions now. The students in 3/4D have been working hard on their number patterns and code cracking different Mensa puzzles that Mrs D has given them. We are getting ready for our poetry assessment and will be finished our oil pastel turtle drawings this week. Our reading buddy program has been working well so far. We also have one more museum kit to explore this week. |
Year 4 |
The Year 4 students have been drawing together all their knowledge and understanding to write a variety of styles of poems as part of their assessment. Coming up they will get to recite a poem to an audience. In Mathematics students have been investigating strategies used to efficiently answer multiplication and division number facts along with being introduced to algebra through finding missing numbers in an equation. Work in HASS and Science has been tailored to link into our excursion to Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre in the next couple of weeks. |
Year 5 |
Year 5 are enjoying researching European countries in HASS. As part of our inquiry unit, we worked collaboratively as a class to decide which countries were of genuine interest to us (each class is doing something totally different). In Mathematics, we are looking at real world application of data which also links to our HASS. In English, we are continuing to add to our Bump It Up displays. |
Year 5/6 |
In 5/6, students have been looking at the components that form networks in Technologies and identifying whether these may be internal or external components or peripheral devices. Students have also been investigating the question: “Why do people live where they do?”. This question has led us down a rabbit hole of demographic, economic and environmental data! |
Year 6 |
In Year 6, students have been analysing the language features used within humorous narratives and explaining their impact on a target audience. In Science, students have been identifying the impact of faults in a circuit and constructing their own simple circuits out of conductive materials. |
Congratulations to our 2023 School Leaders who received their captain badges today.
Meet Prim - Prep D’s class mascot! Prim gets to go home with students and share great adventures with them.
