Dear Parents/Carers,
MUSIC SHOWCASE AND 50TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT
The events of Friday September 9 and Saturday September 10 will be memorable moments in my time at Craigslea. It was a wonderful display of our community spirit. I appreciate the effort parents and carers put into ensuring their children were present for their performances at Craigslea State High School for Showcase, as well as in the Hall for the 50th Anniversary Celebration. In this day and age, it is not uncommon for families to opt out of such events with life being so busy. However in not doing so, it is a fantastic lesson for the next generation about what it means to be part of a community and part of a team where everyone is important.
There are many people to thank. Pauline Stockill (Music Teacher) and Sally Doyle (Choir Assistant) for their preparation of the choir performance which gave me chills; the instrumental music teachers (Jen Owen, Brendan Schick and Amanda Jerram) and the excellent performances from their students. A number of our staff attended to support Mrs Stockill on the evening which was much appreciated.
The buzz at the 50th Anniversary event was incredible. Children having fun at all the activities planned for them thanks to OSHC and the P and the C; families enthusiastically watching their children's performances in the hall; everyone mingling whilst eating, drinking and listening to the wonderful jazz band; the atmosphere in the classrooms watching past students gasp at seeing their Year 6 photo and running into past teachers and classmates. The staff have worked all year to prepare the children's items for the capsule which will be re-buried in the last week of the school year as well as for the hall performances. Thanks to the staff as there were a number who worked hard to get the rooms ready with the displays and those who played a key role on Saturday making sure everything ran smoothly particularly Erin Wiles (Head of Inclusive Curriculum, Natalie Marhinin and Sarah Abdy (Deputy Principals) and Alison Jones and Pauline Stockill in the hall. Special thanks to P and C President Elizabeth Lynch, Joel Miller and Sarah Hands (P and C Vice Presidents) and P and C Treasurer Paul Madey for everything they did to make sure the event was such a success. Brad Scott who put together the children's book and the 50th Anniversary Book as well as creating the classroom and Hall PowerPoint Displays.
Our mural is almost finished thanks to artist Wendy Cumes-Rowell who has done a beautiful job at capturing the work of the Winning Artists who entered our 50th Anniversary Art Competition. I encourage you all to stop by and have a look at how it has turned out.
As we near the end of our 50th birthday year, there will be a lot of great memories to cherish.

Term 4 - Year Level Curriculum Snapshots
The Term 4 Curriculum Snapshots for each year level are uploaded to the school website and included in each class termly newsletter. The Curriculum Snapshot provides you with an overview of what your child will be learning in their classroom for Term 4. It can be used to help focus your conversations with your child about their learning and the types of activities that they are currently undertaking.
PBL
The focus for the fortnight is:
We hope you have had a safe and enjoyable break and are ready for another big term, full of exciting learning and events. We look forward to working with both you and your children through a productive term and finishing the year strongly and successfully.
The first step to learning at school everyday, is being present in class with the required materials, showing you are ready to learn. Every lesson, of every day at school counts towards learning and improvement. It is our firm belief that students who attend and engage in schooling all have the ability to learn and improve. All students have goals for their learning and are striving to reach them.
At Craigslea SS:
- We are ready to learn.
- We get involved and have a go at all activities.
- We make sure we have all materials and resources that we need.
- We set goals in our learning to help us be the best we can be.
- We ask for help when needed.
- We use a strategy to help us reset if needed.
Inclusive Education - All Students Succeeding
The Department of Education's Every student with disability succeeding plan 2021–2025 aims to support the success and wellbeing of every student with disability through each stage of learning in an inclusive education system in regions and in schools.
The plan commits to 45 actions, including transitioning to a new resource allocation model for students with disability. This action will complete the final recommendation of the Queensland Disability Review.
The department has commenced a 2-year transition to a new students with disability – reasonable adjustments resourcing (RAR) model. The RAR model will support all students with disability based on the adjustments they need to access and participate in education. In the most recent state budget, the Queensland Government announced $80.6 million to support transition to the new model. More information about the transition to the new RAR is outlined in the information for students and families fact sheet.
Active School Travel
Park & Stride
You’ve probably heard of ‘Park and Ride’, but what about ‘Park and Stride’?
Active School Travel encourages students to walk, cycle, scoot, carpool and catch public transport to and from school, but some parents still need to drive their children to school as part of their journey to work or other activities. Alternatively, you may live a long distance from the school and can’t actively travel all the way from home.
Even though you might need to drive your children to school, you can still make a difference to the traffic congestion and safety around our school by Parking & Striding to school.
Use the Active Travel map to find your Park & Stride starting point. Parking and walking to school from a point marked by the yellow circle or further out on the map will be counted in your child’s class active travel statistics.
So don’t miss out on Walking, Wheeling Wednesdays!
Did you know?
10% of all journeys people make are 1km or less and 50% are under 5km. Consider walking or riding your bike for short journeys. It’s easier, better for you and saves on petrol!
Upcoming Active School Travel Events:
- Day for Daniel Walk - Wednesday 26 October, week 4
- Litter Walk - Wednesday 9 November, week 6
- Where's Santa? Walk - Wednesday 7 December, week 10
Have a great fortnight!
Sarah Abdy and Natalie Marhinin.

Prep |
Preps have been learning to write their opinion about a Julia Donaldson book as part of our author study. What can be achieved in one minute? How long does it take to take your shoes off? We are exploring these questions in maths as we learn about time and duration. We are finding lots of things that roll and spin as we investigate movement in science. In HaSS, we have been examining messy and clean areas. Guess whose desk is the messiest in Prep? |
Year 1 |
We have been exploring the structure of a Procedure in English. We know a procedure has: a title, list of equipment and/or ingredients and a sequence of steps to be followed. This week we enjoyed making popcorn and writing a procedure. In Maths we are learning to collect data and make a graph. Science is so much fun exploring Sound! We all know how to make a lot of SOUND!!!!!! |
Year 2 |
This week in year 2 we have had a lot of fun pretending to be George from ‘George’s marvellous medicine’! We have created a disgusting smoothie for Grandma by picking some really gross ingredients. We’ve also had some fun bumping up our writing to make it sound better! In science we are learning about one of earth’s resources – water. We’ve just begun reading about Whizzy’s journey. |
Year 3 |
We have been learning how to write a Diamante Poem and having fun exploring onomatopoeias and alliteration. In Science, we continue our Inquiry about “How do materials change when heated and cooled?” We used “spiderweb conversations” to take turns sharing our thoughts, knowledge and what we wonder. While in Maths, we can’t get enough of fraction and multiplication facts! |
Year 4 |
We have been looking at how to bump up our writing by adding evidence from the text. In Science, we are examining how forces affect our daily lives. Looking at what we can do to make our lives more sustainable in HASS has us thinking about the small changes that we could make in our lives. |
Year 5 |
The Year 5s are getting very excited for camp, only 2 weeks to go! In Mathematics, we are learning lots of useful strategies to help us solve real-world problems. We are also reading the novel ‘Storm Boy’ and will be comparing it with the movie version in our English Unit. In HaSS, we are discussing the values of democracy and how we can solve issues in our school and community. |
Year 6 |
In Year 6, we have been investigating the language features, text structures and visual features found within print advertisements. In Mathematics, we have started looking at chance games and explaining why there is a difference between relative and expected frequencies. All students had a great time at Year 6 camp and we cannot wait to show parents the photos! |
Our Beautiful 50th Anniversary Mural! Thanks Wendy!
50th Anniversary Snaps
Look at these fantastic photos of our wonderful 50th Anniversary Celebration. Thanks everyone for coming!

Year 6 enjoyed their day out exploring the Botanic Gardens, visiting Parliament House and engaging with hands on Science and Tech at the QUT Cube
