Dear Parents/Carers,
LOST PROPERTY/UNNAMED CLOTHING
An enormous amount of uniform and non-uniform clothing as well as lunch boxes, water-bottles etc have been sorted through. We go to pains to return these items if they are named. It is quite sad the amount of clothing that can't be returned to their owners because of the amount of items that are unnamed. I have two run of the mill children no more or less complex than any of yours. In their thirteen year schooling career, I have had to replace very few items because we did not send ANYTHING to school without an indelible name. It would always find its way back to us eventually particularly if my villains knew their weekly tuckshop treat or special weekend activity was at stake. Teaching responsibility for one's belongings gradually throughout primary school is so helpful in secondary school, when they have expensive phones, electronic devices and uniforms that cost an arm and a leg to replace!
We will put back the water bottles, lunch boxes and unnamed non-uniform clothing in the Lost Property Area just on the other side of the Parent Carpark (between the Senior Toilets and Year 5 Eating Area). They will be emptied and no longer available for collection after Tuesday August 16. We will donate whatever we can, to charity.
PARENT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT FRAMEWORK
Early next week you will receive an email with the parent community engagement framework attached. This has been developed based on the school opinion survey and in consultation with School Council, Staff and Coffee Morning participants. We require some feedback to take to the School Council Meeting on August 22, so ask if you would like to have some input, to complete the survey and submit it promptly to us please.
CALENDAR
The Schoolzine Calendar has been updated for the remainder of the term. There have been some adjustments to some activities so please access this from EVENTS in this newsletter or from Calendar in the APP. Please note Reading Club will not take place for the rest of the term, due to our current difficulties with staffing due to illness. Running Club has been discontinued for the remainder of the term, due to only a very small number of children attending.
50th ANNIVERSARY: SEPTEMBER 10 (12 to 4pm)
Plans are well underway for the school's 50th Birthday Party. Don't forget to set aside the afternoon. Please CLICK HERE for the flyer so you know the time of your child's performance.
Have a good week,
Kathy

PBL & Social-Emotional Learning
The focus for the fortnight is:
Be a Friend – We respect everyone’s personal space bubbles.
Knowing how close or far away to stand from other people is one of our many social skills. For most of us, we don’t have to think about this, we just know. For some children, this may not happen naturally and they may require support to understand how far or close to stand to someone and why this is important.
Personal body space is the imaginary ‘space bubble’ that surrounds our bodies. We like to keep this area to ourselves most of the time. If people enter our personal body space we might feel uncomfortable and move away from the person. The complexity of personal body space deepens when we explore different relationships in our lives.
The space bubble is smaller with our immediate family, meaning that we can stand closer to them and feel safe and comfortable. With strangers and people we don’t see as often we need to stand further away. Other factors are also important, including age, gender, culture and emotions.
We don’t just have personal space around our bodies, we may have it on other spaces too. An imaginary zone forms around our desk space, table space at dinner and around us while we are on public transport. When someone invades our personal body space they become a ‘space invader’. If this person is a stranger, we may even feel scared as well as uncomfortable.
When teaching personal body space rules to children we can use our arms to show the distance you stand from someone. A fully outstretched arm represents the distance between people in your outer circles and the distance between the end of your hand and your elbow can represent the distance you can stand with people in your inner circle. This can be modelled by placing your elbow on your hip and reaching your arm towards the person. We can also tune children in to other people’s body language when the child is too close and the person feels uncomfortable. Looking at spaces between characters in books and on television can also be useful. If your child participates in pretend play you can demonstrate personal space using characters and toys.
Bridge Builders: Talk and Listen strategy
This is a great strategy to walk through with the children as it is a strategy that will yield great outcomes including confidence to have their say, learning to be a listener and negotiating a win-win.
Often, the child wanting to resolve the conflict can’t get the cooperation of the other and therefore, often requires the support of an adult. Using this at home with your children gives them the practice they need and the skills and language to use it at school. Encourage them and enjoy the peace that comes with their success! How to do it?
Have a great week!
Sarah Abdy and Natalie Marhinin.

Prep |
In Prep we have been learning about all sorts of materials in Science. We have been learning about fabric and this week we are exploring glass. Last week we enjoyed the activities for NAIDOC week including the games at playtime as well as songs and stories that we shared. In English, we have been learning to add details to our sentence writing and always, always, practising our reading. |
Year 1 |
Year 1 have completed their learning about how to write a character preference and will now focus on narrative writing. In maths, we are learning about time duration, as well as how to tell time to the half hour on digital and analogue clocks. |
Year 2 |
Year 2 are having fun learning about multiplication and sharing, through a lot of hands of materials. Last week we really enjoyed the NAIDOC week activities! Alirah from 2H shared some special items from her culture with the 3 Year 2 classes. |
Year 3 |
Year 3 have continued working hard on researching about significant places around Australia. In English, we have been writing about these significant places. We have been working hard learning about time and money in Maths. In Science, we have been learning how to use thermometers to measure heat. |
Year 4 |
Our investigations and inquiry into the requirements for living things continues. Plants are growing, beans are sprouting, and even fish are swimming. We eagerly await the arrival of our chirpy additions – coming soon. We continue to take quality notes from reliable sources for the purpose of writing information reports and have kicked off some very interesting spider web conversations. It’s all happening in Year 4! |
Year 5 |
Year 5 are having a great time learning all about the program ‘Scratch’ as we get ready to create our own game in Digital Technology. In Science, we are continuing work on ‘Light’ with a lot of experiments and in HASS we are learning all about the Eureka Stockade and why it was such a significant event during the ‘Gold Rush’ years. |
Year 6 |
Year 6 have begun learning our performance piece for CSS’s 50th birthday – we are so excited to show you what we’ve come up with! In Science, we have been looking at earthquakes and cyclones and identifying how people may prepare for natural disasters. In HASS, we have investigated how Henry Parkes’ achievements may have led to federation in Australia. |
