Dear Parents/Carers,
Well Term 1 certainly went out with a bang! It certainly was a disappointment to end the term that way especially for the younger children who were keen for their Easter Bonnet Parade. As you can see below, staff worked to a program so we could make the most of the last few days and important planning tasks for Term 2, moderation of Term 1 student work and some professional development was undertaken.

Complete planning for T2 |
We are pleased we can commence the term as we were before the lockdown.
Today we have a number of Year 5 and 6 students competing at the Wavell State High School Problem Solving Competition. We will share more about this experience in the next newsletter but there were certainly happy faces ready to start work this morning as you can see from these photos.

Some of our School Captains and Music Captains are attending the Anzac Square Ceremony in the Brisbane CBD today. We will not be attending the Kedron Wavell RSL March on Sunday as a school this year due to the RSL indicating they would prefer reduced student participation due to COVID. However, we look forward to a strong contingent attending from Craigslea next year. We will be watching a pre-recorded Anzac ceremony prepared by Mrs Stockill this afternoon in classrooms whilst Year 5 and 6 will watch the ceremony together in the hall. As COVID plans were so up in the air prior to the holidays, we decided this would be the most reliable way of ensuring students participated in a ceremony. This ceremony will be distributed to parents before the end of this week.
Solar Installation
As you may be aware, we have received late notification on the last day of Term 1, of a major solar installation project occurring in our school this week. This is a state-wide project and the panels are being put on top of the hall roof. This will not affect the use of the hall but we may have some power outages in the early stages of the project which may temporarily effect our telephone lines in and out excepting calling out for emergencies.
Dress Code (IMPORTANT)
Attached to this newsletter is the Dress Code. Teachers this week have been asked to send out reminder slips to those students whose uniform does not align with the code. We have excursions, Gala Days and instrumental music events occurring in the coming weeks as you will see below. Students whose uniform does not align with the dress code and have not applied for exemption supported by the appropriate cultural/religious/medical evidence, will be withdrawn from extra-curricula and school leadership activities and responsibilities. This code is supported by the Education Act and was ratified by our school’s P and C, please assist your child so they can take part in these events and responsibilities.
Upcoming Events
- Monday 26th April and Monday May 3rd Anzac Day and Labour Day Public Holidays. School will be closed.
- Tuesday 27th April Bridge Builders Parent Information pre-recorded session.
- Wednesday 28th Year 4 Excursion Ngutana Lui
- Thursday 29th Prep to 3 Assembly: The following parents/carers may attend: Prep parents (1 per family only as they are doing a performance on assembly) and parents of students in other year levels who are receiving an award. We still have to adhere to 2 square metres indoors. All parents are requested to bring a mask in the event it is difficult to socially distance indoors.
- Friday 30 April Gala Sport
- Thursday May 6: Mothers’ Day Stall
- Friday May 7: Sensitivity Unit Closure Event.
Enjoy the upcoming weeks and long weekends!

PREP 20222 INTERVIEWS FOR IN-CATCHMENT FAMILIES. Please contact the front office NOW if you are in the Craigslea SS catchment and you are enrolling your child into Prep next year.
First parent information session for Prep 2022 will be by Zoom on 6 May at 9.30am and 6pm. This a courtesy session only. No requirement for parents to attend.
Religious Instruction (RI) - change
While we still need to implement a COVID-safe plan, assemblies will be impacted for the children enrolled in RI. The Yr 3 RI class ONLY will not attend assemblies in weeks 2, 6, 10 and will attend their religious instruction class instead. This is unless they are receiving a reward or award. In this case, children will be honoured on assembly and parents will be invited up. Be sure to keep your eye on the newsletter for announcements.

Social-Emotional Learning
Set worthwhile goals and make plans to achieve them.
If we set small, achievable goals or steps, we have the best chance of succeeding with our learning. It is important to remember though, that the mistakes we make along the way build our resilience, character and determination. Who knows what can happen from that point?! Create some discussion at home around the stories below and those that began with a failure. What is special about each story?
Thomas Edison - When asked about the many thousands of failures he had when trying to create the light-bulb he famously said, " I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work."
Are you scared to try something new?
Michael Jordan – considered by many to be the greatest
basketball player ever.
"I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game-winning shot and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."
Dr Seuss had his first book rejected by publishers 27 times before finally being accepted. He was just about to throw it in the garbage bin when a company decided to publish it.

The Wright brothers wanted to build a flying machine that would stay in the air for a sustained time. They had to build many prototypes until they eventually constructed a design that flew for 10 seconds. This changed the world forever.

Parent Information session: Bridge Builders
Parents are invited to learn about the Bridge Builders program via a live ZOOM session on Tuesday 27 April at 5:00 pm. This session will be recorded if you can’t make the live session and will be available to view at a later date. If you intend to join the live session, please email me ngree7@eq.edu.au by 12 pm on Tuesday so that I can forward the link to you.
Bridge Builder strategy: Make an agreement
This is not an easy strategy, but children continually amaze me with their ability. Ask your child if they have ever used this strategy. Practise some scenarios over dinner. You could teach them a highly valuable skill.
When you both want the same thing, aim to make an agreement for a win, win situation. Making an agreement is about being fair to both, or all that are playing in the game.
First work out who gets to go first…
- Use Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who goes first
- Ask someone to think of a number between 1 and 10. You and a friend try to guess it. The closest gets to go first.
- Hold a leaf in one hand behind your back. The players need to guess which hand it is in.
Then, what is the condition to ensure fair play?
- Ask a teacher to time each turn so that it is fair.
- Ensure both teams have the same number of players
- … and evenly matched.
- Have a signal when a player wants to query a ruling, then replay the point.

2021 NAPLAN
Students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar & punctuation) and numeracy. At CSS we believe good teaching happens every day and NAPLAN is just another day with an interesting experience to work through. The best preparation is for students to have an experience of the type of test and questions and formats they will come across in NAPLAN.
NAPLAN data can certainly provide us with some insight but it is not as robust as the day to day observations of ongoing learning data a teacher collects and responds to in report cards and interviews.
All year 3 and 5 students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests. This year the tests will be held on the 11th, 12th and 13th May. On Monday 10th May, we have preparation time where we move desks and get our rooms ready. We make sure that everyone is aware of the routine for the following days and have some practice to decrease anxiety around the test by being clear about the expectations. On Friday and each test afternoon, we have the opportunity to catch up on any tests.
For the NAPLAN program, 'disability' is defined as per the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992. This means students who regularly access additional time, a quieter space and reading assistance for numeracy questions, these can be accommodated during the NAPLAN tests. These adjustments for students are determined in line with a range of protocols on a case-by-case basis by the school together with the parents/caregivers.
Targeted Learning Teachers will be in contact with parents/caregivers of students who will require these additional adjustments to support their NAPLAN experience. Parents/Caregivers will be asked to sign a Record of Adjustment form indicating they agree that these adjustments should be in place for the NAPLAN tests. Without this signed document, the adjustment cannot be offered to your child during NAPLAN.

Working in their teams prior to the challenge on Thursday!
Green Team is a new student group that has been set up to spread the message of sustainability throughout our school. Green Team will be involved in various projects throughout the school year, starting with Cap Crusaders. We are asking that children collect bottle caps and put them in the "Lid Boxes" in their year level block. Green Team will then send these to Ocean Crusaders who will provide us with bricks that we can use to create environmental, creative and sustainability inspired projects at Craigslea. We are asking for your help with this project by collecting and bringing in the bottle caps and lids featured in the following images:
Welcome back from a lovely break. I hope you all enjoyed your Easter. We are back into the swing of things in the music department.

Book Club
Book Club Issue 2 orders have been distributed to students - I apologize for the delay on these orders, the lockdown at the end of Term 2 caused delivery delays. Book Club Issue 3 catalogues can be viewed online. All ordering and payments can be completed online using the Scholastic Book Club LOOP Platform or the LOOP app. Place your Book Club Order by May 10.
ANZAC Day Reading
Many children have been borrowing books from our ANZAC Day display. It is great to see them take an interest in this important part of Australian history. Children in Year 3 to Year 6 who are participating in the Student Resource Scheme can access digital books on ANZAC topics using the Sora app https://soraapp.com/library/eduqueenslandau/curated-1200058/page-1
National Family Reading Month - will you accept the challenge?
There is an amazing link between reading and its long-term value to our children’s success in school. However, we also know it is not always that easy to put into practice with our busy schedules. That is why we are working together with Scholastic to ask our families to take the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge – to inspire you to make reading together for at least 10 minutes every day a focus, to create positive, long lasting reading habits and lifelong readers! Sign up here to accept the challenge. I would also love to share pictures of your children and family members reading together - please send photos to tknig93@eq.edu.au.
