Prep and Year 1 Playgrounds
The Department of Education has accepted a tender for our Prep and Year 1 playground upgrade and there is a proposed start date for the end of this term or early in the summer vacation. We are very excited for our students in the early years to be able to access new playground equipment. A big thank you to our P&C for committing the majority of funds for this project, and to our school community who support the fundraising efforts for the benefit of our students. Prior to the commencement of works, we will share some images of the new playground design.
Cybersafety Sessions
Our years 3-6 students, all teachers and parents learned some interesting information regarding our online identities and how we can educate our students to navigate the digital world safely. One of the most important messages is that the online world is not going away and we need to educate our children to use the internet in a healthy way. We appreciate the support of the P&C helping to organise and fund these important sessions.
Tuckshop Volunteers Day – Friday 3 November
A big shout out to our tuckshop staff and volunteers. Our tuckshop offers a great service to our students and families so that our students can have healthy food and special treats to help them learn and play throughout the day. Thank you for your hard work and being involved in our school community!
Have a fabulous week everyone.
Nikki
PBL & Social-Emotional Learning
The focus for the fortnight is:
Be a Friend – We speak positively and politely to each other.
There is always a reason to smile. The politeness and respectful courtesies given by the students each morning as they start the day are a reason someone smiles everyday at our school. I want to extend our appreciation of the care and time given by families to nurturing values that will continue to stand our students in good stead.
This fortnight, students are focusing on the importance of speaking positively and politely. Students are encouraged to speak positively and politely to all students, staff and visitors at CSS always and in all settings. We can make others happy or hurt their feelings when we speak. Students will understand that speaking unkindly can affect how people feel and that it is always important to be kind and fair.
At Craigslea, we believe that being safe and happy at school impacts academic success. Each classroom will explore the lesson focus in a variety of ways with the objective of upskilling our students with lifelong, transferable skills.
BYOD iPad Information Session
We understand that technology plays an increasingly important role in education, and we are committed to providing our students with the tools they need to succeed in the digital age. To support families in understanding how iPads are used in the classroom, we will be holding an iPad parent information session for Year 3 and 2024 Year 4 families on Wednesday, 8 November, from 5:30-6:15pm in the 5/6J classroom. This session will provide an overview of our iPad program, an introduction to the learning apps used in the classroom, and tips on how parents can support their child's learning at home. We highly encourage all parents to attend and look forward to seeing you there.
Step Up Day
At Craigslea we act to support all children with the transition to their new year level in 2024. As part of this support, we will have Step Up Day on Monday 4 December 2023 for our current Prep-Year 5 students.
Step Up Day provides children the opportunity to be acquainted with their new class members and meet their new teacher (where possible). During Step Up Day children will spend approximately one hour in their 2024 classroom and experience a learning/ get to know you activity. The aim is to enable them to be more comfortable about the change to a new class. This day also provides children an opportunity to be familiar with their new classroom and to then be confident to orientate themselves on Monday 22 January 2024 when they return to school.
After their session, children will bring home a class placement note. This note will inform you of your child/children’s class teacher and class placement for 2024. These sessions are very effective in supporting students transition to their new class.
For our 2024 Preps they are invited to their Meet the Teacher session on Thursday 23 November - 9:30-10:30am. Our 2024 Preps will come to “big” school and meet their teacher and fellow classmates and have fun engaging in some activities whilst checking out their classroom.
2024 Student Leader Selection Update
This week I had the privilege of interviewing school captain candidates, with the unenviable task of shortlisting candidates for the school captain election. The future is in good hands if I go by the standard of candidates aspiring to be leaders of our school student body next year. We have articulate, curious, humble, community-minded and inspiring school captain candidates who are committed to adding value to our school. The courage of students choosing to put themselves forward for the leadership selection process cannot be understated. We were so impressed by their understanding that there can only be four final captains (two school captains and two school vice captains) and that they were already recognised as leaders in our community, given that they had made it through the first stage. Thank you to our parents for their understanding and support of the process too, as we engage in the leadership selection process for 2024.
The delivery of speeches and voting by our Year 4 and 5 students and staff for the 2024 Student Leaders will occur across week 7. Children who have been successfully shortlisted to deliver a speech for school/vice captain, music captain and house captain have been notified. Well done to all those students who have put themselves forward to lead Craigslea in 2024!

Prep |
In prep, we have been having a lot of fun viewing and listening to the book, Superworm and we have been practising to write a preference about a character we like in the story. We are using our knowledge of different parts of a sentence to formulate our writing, using familiar words and having a go at spelling unfamiliar words using our letter-sound knowledge. |
Year 1 |
In Year 1 we have been learning how to read a procedure fluently and with the appropriate expression. In Writing, we are learning to bump up our procedures using our learning walls and writing checklists. We are doing this by adding adjectives, adverbs, detailed pictures and different types of punctuation. In Mathematics, we are using learnt addition and subtraction strategies to assist us in solving a variety if word problems. In Science, we have continued to explore sound by investigating the volume and pitch made by musical instruments, |
Year 2 |
Another successful week practicing our understanding of Capacity. Using sand to measure how much objects can hold has been fun. We are now investigating Mass using scales which is very different and exciting. Our Hass unit has given us opportunities to discuss what connects us to different classrooms in different countries like Nepal and Japan and here in Charters Towers. We are learning that even though we can be so far away and so different, we are still the same in so many ways. |
Year 3 |
Onomatopoeia, alliteration, similes and repetition are some of the language features Year 3 have been including in their poem writing. In Mathematics, students are learning how to find equivalent fractions and the different ways in which we can represent fractions. Things are starting to heat up in science, as we investigate how heat can change different solids and liquids. |
Year 3/4 |
There are force diagrams being drawn and explained in Science for the Grade 4s while the 3s are exploring how different liquids freeze (solidify) and revising their understanding of the states of matter. We are all starting to plan and construct our persuasive text about a sustainable practice. We are assessing our knowledge of time this week. |
Year 4 |
Year 4 students have been investigating compound shapes in Maths by making tangrams. We will be starting to plan and construct our persuasive texts on a sustainability issue very soon in English. In HaSS, we are studying the vital resource of water. Our inquiry question is, ‘how can we save water at home and school?’ Our Science focus is friction, a very important force, especially if you’re driving on icy roads. |
Year 5 |
Year 5 are super excited about one big event this week CAMP! Keep an eye out on the Facebook Page to see all of our exciting adventures. We will be caving, body boarding, catapults, discos and much more! |
Year 5/6 |
This week our year 5s are at Currimundi, engaging in various physical and emotional challenges. Our 2024 nominated student leaders are practising their leadership skills as they navigate team building challenges with their peers. Meanwhile, back at school, the 6s are focusing on the HASS and Science where they use their inquiry skills to learn more about the impact natural events have on Earth’s surface, particularly looking it weather events. |
Year 6 |
Year 6 have been investigating how the rights of groups in Australia have changed over time in HASS. In Maths, we have been exploring probability and comparing observed and expected frequencies in our chance lessons. |
