The theme for this year is ‘PLAY - You, Me and Our Communities’. We are excited to be able to offer this event again and can’t wait to enjoy a fun morning with our early years students to share a morning of imagination, play, exploration and fun!
We look forward to welcoming our families and community members, including many of our local Kindy Kids!
Activities include:
- Tiny Worlds
- Bubble Disco
- Arts and Crafts
- Futsal
- Parachute games
- Zen Den
- Relax and Read
- Sensory play and Potions
- ... and much more fun!
Under 8s Day was initiated by Early Childhood Australia, to create a day highlighting the importance of the early years of a child's life. The first eight years of development are crucial, and these years are when children build the foundations of their view of the world and themselves.
Children are born investigators, and this day aims to nurture their natural curiosity and playfulness. We can do that by providing various experiences and learning opportunities, which will ignite a love of learning that will last a lifetime.
P&C Day – Friday May 19
This annual event acknowledges the hardworking P&C members for their tireless efforts each year to provide support for Qld State Schools. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our P&C at Craigslea. The P&C relies very much on members and volunteers to give their time to support the well-being of our students and staff and to raise funds to improve the educational facilities and resources for our students.
Our P&C runs our Outside School Hours Care, Tuckshop and Uniform shop, Swim Club and Sustainability Group. Most recently our hardworking volunteers have supported a School Disco and Mother’s Day stall for our students and a Coffee and Cake event to celebrate the special mums and significant others. We are also very grateful for the funds that the P&C have raised over the past few years to support the playground upgrades in Prep and Year 1 that will begin later this year.
School Zones
The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and community is of the highest priority. As adults we need to model the way for our young people. I acknowledge that school traffic can be frustrating to navigate at times. Please be mindful of the following:
- Travel at the appropriate speed for the environment
- Adhere to road rules and signage
- Be aware and respectful of pedestrians
- Park responsibly in the right areas.
We are thankful for the strong sense of community we have at Craigslea and for our parents and community members who are helping our students to demonstrate safe and respectful behaviour as they enter and leave the school grounds.
Kind regards,
Nikki
The focus for the fortnight is:
Be a Friend – We respect everyone’s personal space bubbles.
Knowing how close or far away to stand from other people is one of our many social skills. For most of us, we don’t have to think about this, we just know. For some children, this may not happen naturally and they may require support to understand how far or close to stand to someone and why this is important.
Personal body space is the imaginary ‘space bubble’ that surrounds our bodies. We like to keep this area to ourselves most of the time. If people enter our personal body space we might feel uncomfortable and move away from the person. The complexity of personal body space deepens when we explore different relationships in our lives.
The space bubble is smaller with our immediate family, meaning that we can stand closer to them and feel safe and comfortable. With strangers and people we don’t see as often we need to stand further away. Other factors are also important, including age, gender, culture and emotions.
We don’t just have personal space around our bodies, we may have it on other spaces too. An imaginary zone forms around our desk space, table space at dinner and around us while we are on public transport. When someone invades our personal body space they become a ‘space invader’. If this person is a stranger, we may even feel scared as well as uncomfortable.
When teaching personal body space rules to children we can use our arms to show the distance you stand from someone. A fully outstretched arm represents the distance between people in your outer circles and the distance between the end of your hand and your elbow can represent the distance you can stand with people in your inner circle. This can be modelled by placing your elbow on your hip and reaching your arm towards the person. We can also tune children into other people’s body language when the child is too close and the person feels uncomfortable. Looking at spaces between characters in books and on television can also be useful. If your child participates in pretend play you can demonstrate personal space using characters and toys.
BridgeBuilders
Make an Agreement
Children may have conflict with others who want different things to them, or have different perceptions, personalities, cultures and expertise etc. Being able to make agreements and solve problems with diverse people builds innovation and creativity, encourages broader thinking and perceptions, and leads to better decision making and confidence in problem solving.
Make an agreement teaches problem-solving strategies and helps children to be less of a victim of conflict and more of a victor. Many children just focus on what they want in a problem and see only their side. Teaching them to make an agreement encourages them to stop and try to see the problem from the other side, and then try to brainstorm ideas of win-win options. When you teach children how to make an agreement you could be investing powerful skills into the leaders of tomorrow!
Peer Mediators
Congratulations to our BridgeBuilders who have been continuing their duties in the playground as peer mediators for our younger students. Please see below for those who have earned their first certificate. Bronze certificates will be handed out on assembly in week 6.

Walking Wheeling Wednesday’s
Wednesdays at Craigslea, are Walking Wheeling Wednesdays! Each Wednesday, classes are surveyed on how students travelled to school. The class with the highest percentage of active travellers are acknowledge with our AST Star Trophy and the use of our sports/games box for the week. So far this term 5C have been the weekly winners – that’s five weeks in a row! A new record for the school – well done!
5C are also on track to be our Golden Boot Trophy winners for April/May. For a class to be the recipient of the Golden Boot Trophy and afternoon game with one of the leadership team members, they will need to be the class that has over the month, had the highest percentage for actively travelling to school by a certain mode. For May this will be the highest % of walkers (if you park and stride this will be included in this count) with two more Wednesdays left in May, how will you actively travel to school?
Check out how your class is going with actively traveling to school:
Prep Lone Pine Excursion
What a great adventure our Preps had visiting Lone Pine!
Disco Disco
Thank you to the P&C, parent and teacher volunteers for making the Craigslea Disco a special night out at school.
Year 4 students spent time with a guest speaker from Telstra who shared information linking to their learning about large numbers and communications in the past

Year 4 have been exploring artifacts from the Queensland Museum to understand different Indigenous tools and their properties.
Bunyaville Excursion
Year 4 students enjoyed leaning in the great outdoors on their excursion.
Prep |
The Prep students became animal experts for the day on their visit to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. There was lots of excitement as we got to see the Tasmanian devils up close, feed the kangaroos, touch a koala and enjoy raptors soaring right over our heads! We are very thrilled to continue our learning on living things during science. |
Year 1 |
After watching the spectacular performance Year 2 provided at the last junior assembly, Year 1 are eagerly practicing their dance which we will be performing in Week 8! We are bumping up our writing of retells by adding adjectives and interesting verbs. We are giving directions in Maths and Hass and using our inquiry skills to think about why we do certain activities during the day or at night. Soon we will start constructing a diorama for Science – Don't forget your shoe box! |
Year 2 |
During these past few weeks we have been focusing on comparing and contrasting characters from the stories we have read. That means finding how they are the same and how they are different. In Mathematics we’ve been learning about different types of lines and 2D shapes. Looking forward to taking our science learning of Living Things on our upcoming excursion to Nudgee Beach. |
Year 3 |
Year 3 students have been learning about sentence fragments and what makes a complete sentence. They have been practising bumping up their sentences to grab the reader's attention. In HASS, students are exploring different cultural celebrations such as Chinese New Year and Diwali. Our Mathematics activities have been focusing on place value beyond 10,000. |
Year 3/4 |
We are using the main idea comprehension strategy to help summarise our stories. The fours are writing the complication part of our convict journey and the threes are looking at the vocabulary and language features of Kumiko and the Dragon in detail. We are finalising our understanding of fractions and still working on regrouping in our operations. Fair testing in Science for Gr 4 and in Gr 3 we are ready for our assessment on living things next week. |
Year 4 |
Year 4 students and staff have welcomed some baby chickens to our rooms for the last two weeks to link with our Science units. It has been very exciting to watch the chicks hatch and grow! In English, we have begun drafting our historical narratives, focused on a convict’s journey from England to Australia. Our Mathematics activities have been focused on the four operations. |
Year 5 |
Year 5 are enjoying learning all about ‘Space’. We have completed a research task and are now in the process of creating 3D paper-mâché planets to hang around our classroom. In English, we are continuing our work on ‘Persuasive’ focusing on TEEL paragraphs and in Mathematics we are tackling ‘Long Division’ (we have learnt a song to help us remember all the steps). |
Year 5/6 |
Students in 5/6J and 5/6W have been learning about 30-minute cities and 15-minute neighbourhoods in HASS. This knowledge is helping us brainstorm ideas for improving the sustainability of Craigslea State School’s travel! In Maths, we have started looking at efficient strategies for solving multiplication and division and the conventions for solving equations with more than one operator. |
Year 6 |
In Year 6, students have been deepening our understanding of angles by looking at the supplementary and complementary angles and identifying strategies to identify unknown angles around a point. We have also been undertaking some editing lessons to identify how to ‘bump up’ our writing using our marking criteria. |

Fire ants are one of the world’s most invasive pests and they have the potential to devastate our environment, economy and the outdoor way of life we know and love. To stop the spread of fire ants, the Department of Education is collaborating with the National Fire Ant Eradication Program to manage fire ants across schools within South East Queensland. This important work will help protect our schools and community from the dangers posed by fire ants.
An initial pilot program has treated 46 schools across the Logan, Ipswich, Somerset and Gold Coast City local government areas (Metropolitan and South East education regions). This will expand over the coming years to include additional schools. The treatment consists of applying two rounds of an insect growth regulator which sterilises the fire ant queen and prevents new ants from maturing into adults. These types of products are widely used in mosquito control programs, cockroach treatment and pet flea collars and when used according to instructions, are not harmful to humans, pets or wildlife.
The first round of treatment occurred in early 2023 and round two is being completed during April and May. The fire ant bait is being applied by experienced pest management technicians.
The school treatment program supports efforts to eradicate fire ants within South East Queensland by suppressing the fire ant population in areas until eradication treatment takes place. Under the Biosecurity Act 2014 all Queenslanders have an obligation to manage biosecurity risks. The Department of Education is meeting its obligations by managing fire ants on land it owns or manages.
The National Fire Ant Eradication Program is also running a range of community projects to provide residents in selected suburbs with free fire ant bait to treat their yards to support eradication goals. For the latest information on community projects or for more information about fire ants visit: https://www.fireants.org.au
