Dear Parents/Carers,
What a fantastic Prep to 3 assembly we had last week! Prep did a beautiful job of their assembly item to the largest crowd we have had in ages-socially distanced of course! The behaviour of all the children was exemplary. Our next assembly will take place on May 13 at 2.00pm for Years 4 to 6. There will be a band performance at this assembly so we invite the parents of band members and award winners to come along and join us. We will give out the Year 4 to 6 LIFE Awards from the Week 1 Newsletter and the PE Awards from this week's newsletter.
PERSONALISED LEARNING PLANS
These plans outline how we meet needs of students particularly those with English as another language or dialect; Students with Disabilities; Students with Learning Difficulties; Students with behaviour or social/emotional challenges and advanced learners. They contain the recommendations of any specialist reports done at school or supplied by the parent/carer from an external specialist.
These plans are reviewed by classroom teachers in Week 5 of Term 1 and then again in Week 5 of Term 3. These plans are usually discussed at the Term 1 and 3 parent/teacher interviews. We are currently reviewing the communication process to parents about personalised learning plans. If your child has specific needs such as those described above, please talk to your child’s teacher about their personalised learning plan.
TWILIGHT MEETING
Twice this term staff will attend twilight meetings for additional professional development hours. This week staff from Metropolitan North Behaviour Team ran Zones of Regulation Training for Teachers. We use Zones of Regulation for our students that experience difficulty in emotional regulation. They learn to monitor which Zone they are in and the types of activities which help them return to the “Green Zone” which is the learning zone.
PICK UP AND DROP OFF TO SCHOOL
A reminder that students should not be dropped off to school too early. If they need to be at school regularly before 8.15am they should enrolled in OSH. At 8.15am, all students should sit quietly in the 2/3 eating area and at the 8.30am bell be undertaking games that don’t involve running around buildings and keep them close to their classrooms. In the afternoon, we have a 3.20pm bell and at that time students who haven’t been collected should come to the office so parents/carers can be called to clarify the pick-up arrangement.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week for students in Years 3 and 5. It is a point in time test that will take approximately 1 hr in morning and 1 hr in middle session on Tuesday, 1 hr in the morning on Wednesday and Thursday. There are some important ways you can help your child every day which will also help them on NAPLAN days:
- Ensure they are on-time for school.
- Ensure they have had a good sleep.
- Ensure they have had a nutritious breakfast.
- Keep them relaxed about it. It is a point in time test taken in 1 hr. It does not define them. It helps the school guide programs at an individual, year level and whole school basis. The most important and valid measures that your child receives are their report card results as these are the outcome of six months’ teaching.
Finally, I would like to get an Active School Travel Committee together. This committee works with the Brisbane City Council on encouraging alternative ways to travel to school to reduce traffic and congestion. It also helps us apply for resources to make our pick up and drop off areas safer. Please email Kathy on kcana2@eq.edu.au if you are interested.
Have a good week,
Kathy
Social-Emotional Learning
Support and include others. Be tolerant and understanding of difference.

Our differences are what makes life interesting. Imagine if we were all the same. Often, what you like most about your friends are those character traits that are different to your own. Then, you also enjoy the traits that you share. It’s the differences that can cause conflict.
Talk about the differences between family members. When this open conversation takes place at home, children may have a better chance of using this as a basis for their interactions at school. The first link below is more suitable for older students, the second for younger.
Bridge Builders: Talk and Listen strategy
This is a great strategy to walk through with the children as it is a strategy that will yield great outcomes including confidence to have their say, learning to be a listener and negotiating a win-win.
Often, the child wanting to resolve the conflict can’t get the cooperation of the other and therefore, often requires the support of an adult. Using this at home with your children gives them the practice they need and the skills and language to use it at school. Encourage them and enjoy the peace that comes with their success! How to do it?
Please note, you can listen to an audio of the parent information session we conducted recently via the Bridge Builders parent information session link below.
Be the Change … to stop bullying
We know that bullying is different to conflict for 3 reasons:
- It is deliberate
- It is repeated
- There is a power difference
What has power got to do with it? Power can be based on popularity, size, looks, intelligence, skills, accomplishments, being ‘in the group’, demeanour, who they know, position, etc.
Power can be misused by the bully.
This is something we all know, BUT DID YOU ALSO KNOW …..
Power can be given away by the target.
That is, the bystander who knows what is happening but not doing anything to stop it, is giving power to the bully.
… or reinforced by the bystander.
Laughing at or encouraging the bully means the bystander is also bullying.
Religious Instruction (RI) – change
Payment for the student workbook is now due. Please have this paid up by 7 May. Without the workbook, the children cannot participate in RI.
While we still need to implement a COVID-safe plan, assemblies will be impacted for the children enrolled in RI. The Yr 3 RI class ONLY will not attend assemblies in weeks 2, 6, 10 and will attend their religious instruction class instead. This is unless they are receiving a reward or award. In this case, children will be honoured on assembly and parents will be invited up. Be sure to keep your eye on the newsletter for announcements.

Recently, young members of the Green Team and some other enthusiastic volunteers elected to plant some natives on our top oval near the yarning circle. Their eagerness to do the job and cooperation was really special. Thanks to Mrs Jen Green for sourcing the plants, too.

Wavell State High School Problem Solving Challenge
On Thursday 22 April, two Year Five teams and two Year Six teams from Craigslea partipated in the Wavell State High School Middle School Problem Solving Challenge. Students worked on problem solving tasks related to Mathematics, Science and Technology. This was an excellent opportunity to work with students from other schools and provided an extra level of challenge and motivation. Our students worked very hard to complete the tricky challenges and enjoyed the exciting atmosphere of the challenge. They will be presented with certificate at the assembly next week. Well done to all students who participated.
2021 NAPLAN
As stated in the last newsletter, NAPLAN will be occuring on the 11th, 12th and 13th May for Year 3 and Year 5 students. The best way to help prepare your child for NAPLAN is by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply try their best. Teachers have ensured students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance.
If your child is absent for any of the tests, we will arrange for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests at another time during the school's test schedule. Friday 14th May is a designated 'catch up day' for any tests that have not been completed due to illness etc.
The NAPLAN timetable for the Year 3 and 5 students is as follows:
Test | Date | Duration | Details |
Conventions of Language | 11 May |

Term 2 Year Level Curriculum Snapshots
The Term 2 Curriculum Snapshots have been published on our website for all year levels. This provides our parents with an overview of what their child will be covering in class. The Curriculum Snapshot can be used to help focus your conversations with your child about their learning and the types of activities that they are currently undertaking.
North District Cross Country
Craigslea athletes ran in the North District Cross Country trials at Teralba Park on Tuesday 30 April. All ran well and completed the courses with Olivia and Chynna qualifying to compete at the Regional Cross Country in the near future. Many thanks to our supporters who transported students to and from Teralba Park. Thank you Kevin who managed the team, Gordon and George who officiated on the course during the races.
Have a great week,
Mr H
