Dear Parents/Carers,
These two weeks have been action-packed with the Year 6 School Night In, Crazy Sock Day and World Teachers’ Day. These days are a way for staff and students to bond and strengthen our school culture. I am always so proud of the staff and their efforts on these events and days to go above and beyond for their students. Thanks to the P and C and to the OSHC staff for the beautiful cards and cakes given to every teacher. We all felt so valued.

Friday is Tuckshop Day. It would be great if students and parents and staff inundate FaceBook with some positive comments about the tuckshop staff and their service to our school. Please have a think about posting a comment when you see the Tuckshop Day post.
Last week and this week teachers have been engaged in Coaching which involves watching others work and this week the leadership team are visiting every classroom to provide teachers with feedback and their next steps on the implementation of our Literacy Framework. During this time we talk to students about their Reading and Writing. We ask:
Have a good week,
Kathy

NAIDOC WEEK
Do you know what Craigslea has incorporated in the spirit of reconciliation?
- Our Yarning Circle with plans by OSHC to plant a bush tucker garden nearby.
- A small Indigenous garden on the tuckshop corner where the children have painted a serpent on pavers.
- We fly the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags every day.
- We have three framed texts in our school foyer. One is a reconciliation statement, the other is Kevin Rudd’s Apology script and the third is An Acknowledgement of Country.
- We celebrate Indigenous and other cultures 20 March every year.
- Our Kubbi quiet play space. Kubbi is an Aboriginal word for possum; we have a couple of local resident marsupials.
- Books get put on display in the library as part of any display (not usually separate).
- Teachers continue to learn how to embed ATSI perspectives in their units of work.
What have we had in the past?
- High performing Indigenous students were invited to be part of an online learning community called Solid Pathways. This included a twice yearly visit to the University of Southern Queensland.
- Included Sorry Day commemorations, Reconciliation celebrations, NAIDOC week celebrations etc into our assemblies. We have enjoyed Aboriginal performers in the mix. not this year due to the COVID interruption.
- A committee of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members who were keen to build on our Reconciliation journey.
What would we like?
An Aboriginal Elder who would be a regular visitor to our school and guide us further in the spirit of Reconciliation. Can anyone help us?
School Pick-up reminder
Having your child’s name and class on the passenger visor in the car helps us far more than your realise. While we recognise many of your cars now, when it is raining, it is most important that we can see who you are picking up. We want to make the process as smooth as possible for all.
Immersion Day
Year 5 students will participate in a Craigslea State High school immersion day on Thursday 3 December 2020. CSHS gives the children the opportunity to hear about high school – what to expect – in a less formal way. They participate from 9 am – 12 pm and then return to school. The Year 5 teachers accompany them. Please see the attached letter from Mr Mark Farwell, Principal.
Hi My Name is Dee Giudice, this is my first insert into the Craigslea State School newsletter. I am Head of Inclusion here at Craigslea State School and I come with both personal experience in inclusion and many years of educational experience. In this section of the newsletter, I will be sharing some inclusion information and strategies that may be relevant to all families. In future newsletters, I will also be sharing some exciting things happening around our school and in our inclusive classrooms.
As parents we all want the best education and experience for our children at school. An education that caters for all their individual needs. At Craigslea State School, we are committed to making your child’s education the best it can be by providing effective inclusive practices.
So, what is inclusion and what does inclusion look like in your child’s classroom?
Inclusive education means that all students can access and fully participate in learning alongside their similar-aged peers. Teaching and learning strategies are adjusted to meet students’ individual needs. Inclusive education encompasses all aspects of school life and is supported by culture, policies, programs and practices (Dept. of Education, Policy Statement, Inclusive Education, Version 1.1, 25/6/2018).
Simply stated, inclusion is about ALL students belonging!
Effective inclusion is respect for each and every student, when students are respected and accepted as full members of their school community, relationships develop. Once relationships form, teachers, students, and parents develop the capacity to better address all kinds of student diversity and share the responsibility for student success.
Have a great fortnight, Dee
Reading With Your Student
Have you asked your child what they are reading? Can they tell you about the protagonist (main character) or what is happening in their book? Have you heard them read a sentence, a page or a whole chapter? Have you read something to them? Parent involvement in the reading process begins long before a child arrives at school and should continue through the school years to promote a love of reading. In this busy world, try to find some time to connect and share a "reading moment" with your child.
Book Club Issue 8
Book Club Issue 8 is available online . Ordering and payments are due November 16 and can be completed online using the Scholastic Book Club LOOP Platform. This is the final Book Club for the year. Thank you so much to the families who have participated in Book Club during 2020, the points we have accumulated through your purchases have provided the Library with some new titles and students are excited to borrow these new books.
Healthy Reading
Please be aware that we continue to follow the Queensland Education Department Covid-19 advice regarding school library books. We quarantine all returned books for at least 72 hours before returning them to our shelves. Please promote healthy reading by washing hands before and after handling a book.
