PBL & Social-Emotional Learning

The focus for the fortnight is:

Be a Friend – We speak positively and politely to each other.

There is always a reason to smile. The politeness and respectful courtesies given by the students each morning as they start the day are a reason someone smiles everyday at our school. I want to extend our appreciation of the care and time given by families to nurturing values that will continue to stand our students in good stead.

This fortnight, students are focusing on the importance of speaking positively and politely. Students are encouraged to speak positively and politely to all students, staff and visitors at CSS always and in all settings. We can make others happy or hurt their feelings when we speak. Students will understand that speaking unkindly can affect how people feel and that it is always important to be kind and fair.

Bridge Builders: Be Kind

Be_kind.jpg

Being Kind is not only showing respect, care and generosity to the other person but scientists’ have found that when we are kind it makes us feel good too; it can give us a ‘warm, fuzzy feeling.’ The science of being kind shows us that when we are kind we release good hormones like oxytocin which helps us to be friends and trust each other. When you are kind you feel better and so does the person you are kind to. Others who see you being kind can also copy you and be kind to others.

Being Kind to someone who has hurt you doesn’t always seem to make sense. It can feel like the last thing you want to do, especially in a conflict. However, there are many important reasons why Being Kind is a great choice to make.

Let’s have a look at the top 10 reasons:

  • It makes you the hero
  • It shows others that you can manage your emotions
  • It's an important leadership skill
  • You don’t know why the other person is hurting you - maybe they’ve been hurt themselves
  • Other people might be watching you - you can set a great example to them
  • Being kind builds bridges to better understanding - conflict is often caused by misunderstandings
  • Every behaviour has consequences - you only choose your own behaviour, you don't choose others' behaviour
  • You feel happier and more confident when you are kind to others
  • It helps you to feel you belong to a community
  • Kindness is contagious

Walking Wheeling Wednesday

Dawdling with Dads and Dogs – 31 August 2022

Join in on the Active School Travel fun on Wednesday 31/8, as we meet up at one of two designated parks (Redbourne St and Craigslea St) and dawdle with Dads, dogs and the Active School Travel Team to school.

For a bit of pre-Father’s Day fun, grab a Dad, the dog, grandad, uncle, brother and/or friend and meet us at the park to dawdle to school together.

If you normally come to school by car, why not park and stride with us!
