Prep

Our preps have shown so much resilience in the face of change – we have had a few different teachers pop in and the children have adjusted well. In InitaLit, we are learning double consonants ‘ff’, ‘ll’ and ‘ss’, our first digraph ‘sh’ and our new friend, the ‘Quiet Queen’. We are learning about mass in maths (say that really fast!) and for science, we’ve searched for the uses of wood in our playground and classroom.

Year 1

Despite the rain, Year 1 had so much fun on our excursion to the Caboolture Historical Village last Thursday. The students enjoyed looking at artefacts from the past and listening to talks on how people used to live. Most students agreed that being ‘robbed’ by the bushrangers while on the train was the most exciting event!

Year 2

We have not had much luck with excursions and the weather this year. Unfortunately, our John Goss Reserve excursion was postponed until this week and luckily the weather is looking fantastic! We’ve enjoyed exploring an atlas and drawing our own local maps from a bird's eye point of view.

Year 3

Year 3 students are getting right into their main units of work. In English, we have been unpacking the structure of informative texts and reading lots of facts about places. In Maths, many classes have looked at mapping and positional language, with some classes also looking at tick-tock - time! In Science we have already covered ways to keep warm (great for this time of the year) and in HaSS, we have covered maps and symbols in Aboriginal art.

Year 4

In English, we have been examining how to use keywords to create sentences for our information reports. We can group notes together into categories such as diet or habitat. We are using our multiplication and division strategies and still revising fractions and decimals. In Science, we have started growing our seed heads and will be planning an investigation. HASS has us looking at mapping and visiting South America and Africa.

Year 5

Year 5 students have leapt headfirst into our learning this term. We have been analysing Australian Bush Ballads by examining structure, rhyming scheme and language features of the popular poet Banjo Patterson. We have also started to explore how to turn a bush ballad into a narrative. In Maths, we have finished our unit on 12 and 24-hour time and have started our unit on measurement. We will build upon our knowledge of length, mass, volume, capacity, area and perimeter.

Year 6

In Year 6, we have turned our focus to natural disasters in Science. In particular, we have investigated the cause and effect of volcanoes and earthquakes and how these are related to the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates. In English, we have looked at the persuasive techniques used in feature articles including evaluative language, modality, tricolons and rhetorical questions.
