PBL & Social-Emotional Learning

The focus for the fortnight is: Be Independent – We try our best.

Everything that we want to achieve requires us to try our best and some effort. We know that what you do today – the effort you put in – determines your success tomorrow.

This fortnight we are talking and learning about why we try our best and what learner assets we need.

Responding to Feedback (Take it on board): Sometimes it’s hard to hear feedback, but if you can accept that feedback is help, and make the improvements, then you will continuously improve.

Persisting (Sticking to it): Can you stay on task and see your activity through to the end? Learning can be tough at times, and you may feel like giving up or doing mediocre work, but if you persist you will feel more confident next time you try something that is tricky.

Responsible Risk Taking (Have a go): When you try something new, you may expect to be good at it straight away. But it’s OK to make mistakes when learning. Keep practising and never give up! Soon you will improve and become a responsible risk-taker and a better learner.

Taking Responsibility (Stepping up): When you work in a group, make sure you contribute your ideas and help to finish tasks so your group can achieve its work. And when you’re working alone, keep up the great work and take responsibility for your own learning, time management and organisation.

Commitment to Shared Goals (We’re all in it together): You are an important part of your class, your school, your family and your community, so make sure you are a willing participant and help to encourage and assist others to achieve your shared goals.

Our aim is to guide our students out of their comfort zones as learners, so they feel confident to challenge themselves and grow.

Some of our grade 3s setting goals and trying our best:

Bridge Builders: Share and Take Turns

It’s an age-old problem.  While young children are learning to socialise and play with their friends, they inevitably disagree with the actions of others.

It can continue into adulthood.  The difference is, when our experience with social situations deepens, and we get ourselves into embarrassing situations, we learn to resolve conflict with a win-win mindset.

Children need time to learn to do this.  Less time is needed if we teach them the skills and talk them through their conflict with others.  Children feel better when they have had a chance to air their concern.   While we at school can talk it through with both parties, parents can only do this with their own child.

Please spend the next fortnight talking about the ‘Share – Take Turns’ strategy.  Ask them if they used it at school today and how did it make them feel?  Children feel empowered when they use a strategy that works – you can see the pride in them.  When it doesn’t work, you’ll know because they will complain about it when they get home.  This is the time to talk them through it.  Praise their attempt but build their resilience to give it another go. Encourage your children at home to use these skills with each other.  You will then be able to see it in action.

Term 3 - Year Level Curriculum Snapshots

The Term 3 Curriculum Snapshots for each yeal level are uploaded to the school website and included in each class termly newsletters. The Curriculum Snapshot provides you with an overview of what your child will be learning in their classroom for Term 3.  It can be used to help focus your conversations with your child about their learning and the types of activities that they are currently undertaking.
