Deputy Principal's Post
NAPLAN
Well done to the students in Years 3 and 5 for getting through the NAPLAN testing this week. This was the first year that our students have completed the tests online. Thank you to the staff who ensured that the technology was working for the students. These tests are important but only one point of reference for tracking the academic progress of students and schools.
PBL & Social-Emotional Learning
The focus for the fortnight is:
Be safe in all Environments – I keep my hands and feet to myself.
Why teach the behaviour?
Children must learn to keep their hands and feet to themselves at all times. They need to demonstrate an understanding of personal space. When children are upset they need to use their words to express their feelings rather than using their hands and feet to show their feelings. It is important that all children keep their hands and feet to themselves and follow our school expectations, so all children feel safe.
Children who can keep their hands and feet to themselves are able to demonstrate respect for their teachers and classmates. Other children are more likely to want to associate and be friends with them. This skill is a life-long social skill that children will need to master to form and maintain appropriate relationships.
Be a Bridge Builder – Ask them to STOP
When our friends do something that we do not like it is important that we ask them to STOP. This tells your friends what you don’t like. It creates boundaries. Children are often encouraged to tell someone to stop if they are being hurt, whether it be through conflict or bullying behaviours. In actual fact, this is one of the hardest skills to implement and does not always work for them, because it requires an understanding of a number of skills to implement correctly and also because a child cannot choose another person’s behaviour, only their own. However, it is very important that your child knows how to ask someone to stop, so they can be clear to communicate their boundaries.
Tips to teach this skill at home:
- Teach children to stand bravely. The biggest form of communication is their body language.
- Demonstrate to your child the different tones or sounds their voice can make when asking someone to stop. It could be whiney, sarcastic, angry or frustrated. Using a calm, brave tone of voice is empowering.
- Help them to think about the words they use. They need to be clear about what they want the person to stop.
- Remind children to finish with the word “thanks” rather than “please”.
Validating this learning empowers your child with valuable skills to learn how to; Ask Them to STOP and be empowered for life!
