Principal's Post
Dear Parents/Carers,
TARGET 90/50
TARGET 90/50
Today I want to talk about Target 90/50. Target 90/50 is about 90% of our students achieving a C or better and 50% of our students earning an A or B particularly in English.
Congratulations to our staff and students because we are so close to our targets based on our Term 3 English Tasks. We have 86% of our students earning a C or Above (up from 80.7% in Term 2) and 49.4% of our students earning an A or B (up from 28% in Term 2). Our achievement is above or in line with other Metropolitan schools. We are pitching for Target 90/50 for the end of the year. Next Monday afternoon, all our teachers will be working with teachers from Aspley SS, Aspley East SS and Zillmere SS to make sure teachers across the four schools are assigning grades correctly to student work using the year level achievement standards.
HOW DO WE IMPROVE THIS?
Every assessment task in our school has a Marking Guide to assist teachers to assign a grade to the work each semester. In English, the teachers during their planning day each term put together an example of this task (on a similar topic) and pull this apart with students so that they are clear about the expectations of the task. We have attached an example of a Year 1 Bump it Up Wall that is displayed on the walls of the classroom so that teachers can discuss with students on what they need to do in order to reach the next level on the bump it up wall.
Teachers meet each fortnight to group the student work into above standard, at standard and below standard. They analyse the work to find where the learning gap is for each group and co-plan the teaching to fill this gap to try to "bump up" student achievement.
Each year an above standard, at standard and below standard student is chosen and the teacher tracks these students across the year in an attempt to improve their performance. By focusing on these students, the teacher thinks about strategies to use which assist other students performing at a similar level.
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL POSITIONS
Next week, our school will be advertising two Deputy Principal positions. Ms Green will taking long-service leave for the first six months of 2022. For some time, our school has had entitlement for an extra half deputy and we have decided to top this up to a full time deputy as the school will start with 600 students next year.
One of the deputies will be Deputy: Curriculum and Teaching and the second deputy will be Deputy: Student Services. The Deputy Student Services will take on most of the responsibilities of the Head of Special Education Services as the staff have made a decision to retain a Head of Curriculum position instead of a Head of Special Education Services from the start of the 2022 school year. The recruitment process will occur statewide to ensure we have a talented pool from which to select.
Have a good week,
Kathy
