Dear Parents/Carers,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kathy Canavan for all she has done in leading this wonderful school. I am grateful for having this experience as Acting Principal over the next few weeks.
Year 5 Camp
Thank you to the Year 5 students who have displayed exceptional behaviour while away at the Currimundi Camp. On behalf of the school community, I would like to thank Mrs Wiles, Mrs Corkin, Mrs Joyce, Ms Morley and Ms Helsehurst for taking our Year 5 students on camp. These opportunities for our students can only occur when our staff are willing to take time away from their own families.

World Teacher's Day
Our teachers make a difference every day, educating and inspiring our Craigslea Learners. Last Friday was World Teachers' Day and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank our teachers for their important role in our community and for the positive impact they have on the lives of students.
This year we said thank you to our teachers for ‘teaching through every moment’. We acknowledge and show appreciation for the many ways teachers provide support and inspiration to our students. Special thanks to our incredible teachers! It is a pleasure to work with such dedicated team.
We also had the opportunity to celebrate career milestones with some of our dedicated teachers. We acknowledge those teachers who have reached 10, 20, 25, 30, 35 and even 40 years of service with the Department of Education. Congratulations and thank you for your passion and dedication to teaching!
PBL & Social-Emotional Learning
The focus for the fortnight is:
Be a Friend – We treat others as we wish to be treated.
The focus this fortnight turns to the expectation of Be a Friend, the value of respect and the importance of using kind words, kind voice and kind actions. Kindness is so easy to show towards others and evokes feelings of happiness in both the giver and receiver. Teachers will discuss the importance of treating others the way you would like to be treated.
At Craigslea SS this looks and sounds like:
- We use courtesy words in a calm voice
- We consider how we would feel if that happened to us
- We think carefully about what we say before we say it
- We understand how our words and actions affect others
- We keep our body calm and our hands and feet to ourself
- We allow others to participate in activities and share resources
- We respect others space.
Active School Travel

Litter Walk – 9 November 2022
Join in on the Active School Travel fun on Wednesday 9/11 as we meet up at a one of two designated parks (Redbourne St and Craigslea St) and walk to school with the Active School Travel Team.
As a part of National Recycling Week we will be working with Brisbane City Council and their Litter Prevention team to conduct a litter walk on our way to school. We will meet at our 2 usual meeting spots in the park at 8:20am and leave by 8:30am to ensure we get to school on time. On our walk to school we will use equipment provided by the council and pick up litter as we wind our way through our local streets to school. This is a great way to help out our community and the environment.
Natalie Marhinin
Last week we farewelled our amazing Deputy Principal, Mrs Green. We wish you all the best as you head off to retirement and thank you for all that you have done for Craigslea.
As a part of our Active School Travel initiative Walking, Wheeling, last Wednesday we had our Day for Daniel walk. This walk was an opportunity to be active and also practise travelling safely to school. Children wore red and gave a donation to support the valuable work of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

Prep |
In Prep we have been exploring so many Julia Donaldson books and writing about the characters we like and don’t like. The children are learning to use the word “because” to support their ideas. In HASS we have been looking at how to care for places that are special to us. We have done lots of school exploration to look at how things are being cared for. We even talked about how to care for their bedroom - we hope you’ve noticed them having a go at this! |
Year 1 |
We have read some very interesting adjectives this week when the students wrote Procedures on How to Make a Witches Brew!!!! In Maths we have demonstrated our learning about collecting data and representing it in a Graph format. We are working on developing our mental strategies in Mathematics e.g., Friends of 10, Doubles and Doubles +1 as well as adding 10 to a given number. |
Year 2 |
Transformers...more than meets the eye! That got the children interested very quickly! Maths transformations didn’t sound like fun until then. Flips, Slides and Turns are the changes we make in year two. In English we are writing more procedures with some very interesting ingredients. Science and HaSS are both all about caring for a significant place and using our world’s resources efficiently. |
Year 3 |
Year 3 have been immersing themselves in poems of all kinds in English, and flooding ourselves with multiplication facts and fractions in maths. In Science we are continuing to explore matter (solids / liquids) and the effects adding heat or cold has on matter – like wax, oil, milk and honey! In HaSS we are creating brilliant projects based around the five aspects of Health (physical, mental, spiritual, social and emotional). |
Year 4 |
We are well into writing our persuasive texts and using sizzling starts to engage the reader. Rhetorical questions, high modality, emotive language, and calls for action are some of the language features we are incorporating in our writing. In Science, we are annotating force diagrams explaining how contact and non-contact pull and push forces are applied to everyday situations. Maths and HASS are overlapped as we inquire and collect data on how we incorporate sustainability practices at school and begin to investigate how we can propose action plans for improvement. It’s all happening in Year 4! |
Year 5 |
Year 5 are super excited about our camp! It is finally here. This week we will be body boarding in the surf, caving in tunnels, having pool parties and rock climbing. Keep an eye out for photos on the Facebook page. |
Year 6 |
In Year 6, we have started looking at ways to measure the perimeter and area of irregular shapes. We have been engaging in inquiries in Mathematics and improving our use of questioning to guide our thinking and understanding. In Science, we have identified variables that affect the survival of living things and are busy designing experiments that contain fair tests. |
