Dear Parents/Carers,
CAMP
I would like to thank Year 6 staff and students for their enthusiasm and effort which contributed to an excellent camp at Tangalooma. In Week Five, we will see the Year Five staff and students off on their camp to Currimundi. Staff give generously of their time to enable students to go on camp and I would like to thank them on behalf of students and their families. We have just completed a parent survey regarding the destination of the Year 6 Camp in 2023. Canberra was the preferred destination chosen by current parents of Year 5, so we are in the process of making plans which willl be shared with them in due course.

THURSDAY'S SPECIAL ASSEMBLY 9.15am 27th Oct (YEAR 1 to 6)
Assembly will be on at a special time next Thursday morning at 9.15am. This assembly is to farewell Ms Green who was Craigslea's former Deputy Principal of nine years. We hope that as many parents/caregivers can join us for a cuppa in the hall foyer afterwards.
WORLD TEACHERS DAY 28th October
We will celebrate World Teachers' Day on Friday morning with a cuppa from the coffee van and cake for teachers sponsored by the P and C. We look forward to celebrating our teachers and showing them how valued they are by our community.
Have a great week,
Kathy

PBL & Social-Emotional Learning
The focus for the fortnight is: Be Independent – We are responsible for our own actions.
This fortnight we have been discussing the importance of taking responsibility for behavioural choices and accepting consequences. At Craigslea, we have a range of supports to acknowledge the positive choices made by students in following our expected behaviours. Positives include the use of verbal and non-verbal praise, Gotchas, parade certificates, admin rewards and classroom rewards such as drops in the bucket, Corkin Cash and Little Rippers. At times when poor choices are made, logical consequences follow as per our Student Code of Conduct. The explicit teaching and regular review of expectations helps students to develop and extend their capabilities in self-management and personal responsibility.
NAPLAN ONLINE
In 2023, our students in years 3 and 5 will be undertaking the NAPLAN Online in March. Since the test will conducted earlier next year than previous years, we will start familiarising the current year 2 and year 4 classes with the online platform this term. The assessment platform brings many advantages, including a test design that offers test items tailored to students' knowledge and ability.
2023 NAPLAN KEY DATES
Parents and caregivers of children who will be in years 3 and 5 in 2023 will be emailed additional information soon.

Year 3 Spark Lab and Queensland Museum Excursion
Year 3 out and about today exploring, asking questions, investigating and wearing our inquiry hats as we go through Sparklab and the Museum. Lots of 'oohs' and 'aahhs' as our learners delved into the magical world of science.
Kaden from Year 5 at QLD Primary Schools Track and Field. Kaden received 4th in QLD for Shotput with a distance of 10.34 meters! Congratulations Kaden for holding onto 1st place for 2 throws and then 2nd until the last throw.
2022 Toy Drive
Salvation Army Toy Drive - I like to take the opportunity to teach the children that Christmas is not about getting presents, but it can be just as rewarding by giving presents. I’m asking the parents and children of the Craigslea community to donate an unwrapped (new/NOT second hand) present suitable for a primary school child. The donations can be brought to school and put under the Christmas tree in the music room by the 23rd of November. At our Christmas Concert, we will gift all of the donated presents to a representative from the Salvation Army to give to children in need.

Prep |
Preps have been learning to write their opinion about a Julia Donaldson book as part of our author study. What can be achieved in one minute? How long does it take to take your shoes off? We are exploring these questions in maths as we learn about time and duration. We are finding lots of things that roll and spin as we investigate movement in science. In HaSS, we have been examining messy and clean areas. Guess whose desk is the messiest in Prep? |
Year 1 |
We have been exploring the structure of a Procedure in English. We know a procedure has: a title, list of equipment and/or ingredients and a sequence of steps to be followed. This week we enjoyed making popcorn and writing a procedure. In Maths we are learning to collect data and make a graph. Science is so much fun exploring Sound! We all know how to make a lot of SOUND!!!!!! |
Year 2 |
This week in year 2 we have had a lot of fun pretending to be George from ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine!' We have created a disgusting smoothie for Grandma by picking some really gross ingredients. We’ve also had some fun bumping up our writing to make it sound better! In science we are learning about one of earth’s resources – water. We’ve just begun reading about Whizzy’s journey. |
Year 3 |
We have been learning how to write a Diamante Poem and having fun exploring onomatopoeia and alliteration. In Science, we continue our Inquiry about “How do materials change when heated and cooled?” We used “spiderweb conversations” to take turns sharing our thoughts, knowledge and what we wonder. While in Maths, we can’t get enough of fraction and multiplication facts! |
Year 4 |
We have been looking at how to bump up our writing by adding evidence from the text. In Science, we are examining how forces affect our daily lives. Looking at what we can do to make our lives more sustainable in HASS has us thinking about the small changes that we could make in our lives. |
Year 5 |
The Year 5s are getting very excited for camp, only 2 weeks to go! In Mathematics, we are learning lots of useful strategies to help us solve real-world problems. We are also reading the novel ‘Storm Boy’ and will be comparing it with the movie version in our English Unit. In HaSS, we are discussing the values of democracy and how we can solve issues in our school and community. |
Year 6 |
In Year 6, we have been investigating the language features, text structures and visual features found within print advertisements. In Mathematics, we have started looking at chance games and explaining why there is a difference between relative and expected frequencies. All students had a great time at Year 6 camp and we cannot wait to show parents the photos! |
