Dear Craigslea Community,
It has been a challenging fortnight with the wild weather affecting our community. Our thoughts are with all families impacted by the recent conditions. We are here to support you in any way we can. Our dedicated school Social Worker, Bec Blake, has already started reaching out to affected families.
We were pleased to return to business as usual on Tuesday. Fortunately, the damage to the school has been minimal, causing only minor disruptions. We are actively working to address these issues, though we anticipate it will take some time to complete repairs.
Harmony Day Assembly
Harmony Day is one of the most special assemblies of the year. It is a time to celebrate our community's rich diversity and promote inclusivity. We warmly invite you to join us on Monday at 9:00 am for our Harmony Day Assembly. After the assembly, students will engage in Harmony Day activities with their buddy classes.
Unwanted Visitors
Unfortunately, we have experienced an increase in unauthorized access to our school grounds during evenings and weekends, resulting in damage. Recent incidents include:
- Water valves being turned off across the school
- Outdoor air conditioning units being switched off
- Theft of a treasured native beehive and damage to our greenhouse
- Mountain biking and skateboarding on school grounds
- Graffiti on buildings
- Children riding scooters through covered areas
- Boogie board activity on the oval during the recent weather event
All incidents have been reported to the police. For the safety of our community and the preservation of school property, the school grounds should not be accessed outside school hours—this includes activities such as walking dogs, playing in undercover areas, or using the multi-purpose courts.
We encourage our community to remain vigilant. If you see any unauthorized persons on site, please report them to School Watch on 13 17 88 or call 000 in case of emergency.
NAPLAN
This week, our Year 3 and 5 students commenced their NAPLAN assessments. These assessments provide valuable insight into student learning and help us evaluate how we are implementing the Australian Curriculum.
NAPLAN is conducted over a 9-day testing period to prioritise student wellbeing. Families of Year 3 and 5 students have received assessment timetables. Students who are absent will have the opportunity to complete missed tests. All NAPLAN assessments will be finalised by Monday, 24 March.
Year 1/2 Play Precinct
We are excited to share that the long-awaited Year 1/2 Play Precinct project is progressing. A start-up meeting took place today, and we hope to commence construction over the Easter holidays. I will provide a detailed update and timeline in our next newsletter.
Term 1 Parent-Teacher Interviews
In Week 10, parents will have the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s learning progress. These meetings are a valuable opportunity to connect with class teachers, SEAL teachers, and specialist staff to gain insights into your child’s academic journey.
Following positive feedback from last year, we will again host all interviews on a single afternoon/evening. Parent-Teacher interviews will take place on Tuesday, 1 April, from 3:15 pm to 8:00 pm. Booking information will be sent to families shortly.
Term 2 Religious Instruction
Beginning in Term 2, Bridgeman Baptist Community Church will provide religious instruction to our students. Families recently received an opportunity to update their consent for participation. If you have not yet updated your consent and wish to do so, please submit your response by the end of next week. Mrs Wiles will be working with RI Instructors to finalise the timetable in the coming weeks.

World Down Syndrome Day
World Down Syndrome Day is on 21 March every year. The 21st day of the 3rd month was chosen to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
To build our awareness of Down Syndrome, we are asking students to wear socks that are going to be noticed. They might be mismatched socks or bold and colourful. The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks, you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.
So, Friday 21 March, students are encouraged to come wearing their mismatched, fancy, bold, colourful or best socks for World Down Syndrome Day.
